I have come very close to getting a couple of different cubs over the past year or two and they just did not seem wright. With a lot of careful research and time spent, the experimental SQ just kept making more sense.

Yesterday I finally met with Bruce at Backcountry Supercubs and officially made my order for a new SQ2. My buddy here who some of you know ordered one back in December and it was delivered yesterday. He is building his down in Stead. Timing worked out as a fella just backed out on one that has been being and Bruce let me have it. I am having some various mods put into it but delivery date is sometime around July 10. Once received I will start the build thread.

I hope that I am not jumping in over my head as I have never built an airplane but we do have some very good builders here in Truckee that have committed to helping me make it happen.

After speaking with Barnstormer, Randy Goza, Ranchpilot and others this aircraft seems like a build that I can get through. Even more so after seeing how much is completed when the kit arrives. I will hire out the covering to C. King if he wants to do it and Kevin Eldridge seems like the man when it comes to engines. TK Racing does the suspension on the Just Aircraft and did Breedens as well. Seems like a no brainer. The SQ folks are going to start using that fork exclusively as of yesterday it appears and also having the chance to meet them in person with Bruce just made my final decision that much easier.

Anyhow, it's official...I cannot wait to get started.

Pretty awesome, can't wait to see your project come together. I am starting a project of my own, while its not an Sq2, it is kind of along the same lines. I have a set of Javron wings coming in a couple weeks, and am mounting them an experimental cub frame. I am going with Keller flaps, and possibly Slats. Keep us posted on your progress, and I will try to do the same.

To you guys who want to do build blogs: would you like to have a hosted blog on BCP? Or do you prefer just making forum threads?

aktahoe,

Are you gonna have as much of a detailed blog as Bill Rusk? lol

Are you going to be doing most of the work yourself or do you have lackies to do your bidding? I'm really interested to hear how the build manual would work for a noob - or if you really need to be an experienced builder for a backcountry supercub. I saw the current kit at Llano - very cool.

I just chamged the name of this thread and will continue to do so as we get closer..For now I am in full on info grab mode and tying to gather as many ideas possible on weight saving particulars. All ideas welcome please. You have to watch this video below if you have not already..

https://vimeo.com/126962696

That video is too good to not share...

To answer your question Soy- I will be very detailed with the blog and will be looking for a lot of arm chair quarterbacking on ideas...I am going to build a beast thats light and stout...At least thats the goal.

I really wish I hadn't watched that. Now can we get it to cruise at 135 knots and make it so I could get my 82 year old Dad in and out with ease.
Have fun.

Re: I purchased an SQ2 / BackcountryCub...updated 5/21

Great vid. I really liked the cut down propeller /crankshaft flange at 5:19. It's that kind of fanatical attention to detail that adds up (poor choice of words, and watch out Rotax prop flange the next time I take the prop off  ) to major weight savings. There is a certain Zenness (?) to spending time with a Uni-bit and a file. I love studying a flange or bracket, and then making that decision that most of it doesn't have to be there, and getting rid of it. I use the cumulative effect (??) in lightening things up, if you can make it X amount lighter, then multiple X by every time you take off and climb out, pretty soon you have TONS of weight left on the ground, where it belongs. Am I the only one to notice the older pilots by and large, are the most fanatical about weight loss? Older and hopefully experienced enough to fully realize it's benefits. I remember when Pops gave me a tour of his "new" Cub, it didn't take long, not a lot of whiz banggery (???) and gadgetry to it, just a lot of lightness.

Kevin, you have the major advantage of having your 180 for really getting somewhere, therefor you have no excuse for not going all out on the weight saving thing. I hope you are at least considering Oratex fabric, and NO PAINT. I'd go that way in a heartbeat if I cover again. I fully expected by now I'd need to to recover my bird due to a wreck, but so far no luck.

My spell check is starting to smoke, better cut this short.

I could not agree more on this fabric after talking with several that have used it. Any neigh sayers?

The research process is becoming really fun.

I try to get an MSD to find out what something is made of, not a bunch of smoke and mirrors.

No disrespect but I am not seeing a bunch of smoke mirrors. Only a lot of well respected builders utilizing that fabric. I really
am clueless when it comes to doing fabric (for that matter building an aircraft) but as my research grows so does my confidence in certain things. I guess that's the fun part for me anyhow.

Did you mean MSDS? If so, that acronym is in the process of being changed to SDS (Safety Data Sheets) and many companies may already switched to SDS. Just an FYI.

Re: Research thread for building SQ2 -BackcountryCub

The Oratex fabric sounds like a pretty good deal at the moment. It definitely is lighter than other fabric coatings, and much easier to apply (no coatings required). That said, it's more expensive, significantly.

But, to me, the real test is how it holds up in real life. That will come from a bunch of Alaska airplanes covered, and kept outdoors for a few years. That's the real test of a fabric process....how well it holds up.

Then again, if you have to recover more frequently, it's easier to apply......so......

The Breeden's new Glacier Cub is covered with the stuff, and there are others out there that are getting more experience with it.

Re: Research thread for building SQ2 -BackcountryCub

I talked at length to the guys at Oratex. It sounds like great stuff and if I had the $ I'd use it on my Bearhawk. The only thing the made me wonder is that they wouldn't give me a straight answer about how it will last on a plane stored outside. I figured they just don't know because it hasn't been around long enough and most people that use the fabric are in hangars.

The quote I got from Oratex came in around $5k. The quote I got from Stewart's was $2.5k. Although more labor will be involved with the Stewarts and it will be heavier it isn't enough for me to justify paying double for Oratex.
