Re: My Backcountry Super Cub-version 2 (SQ)

Kevin,

A few thoughts if I may....

First off, VERY cool that you are going down this road of asking for input, ya never know when someone mentions that little something that you didn't think of that actually is a big thing! My comments may be worthless but I will throw em out just in case they may help.

As far as paint schemes go, I really like the one you showed a few posts back, simple and great looking. The color of Black and white would look great but I probably would not go there myself. When face on, black makes the airplane very difficult to see, I had a black and yellow Husky years ago and everything on the leading edge was black, looked good but was hard to see. Also, black and UV are not friends. Ya, it will melt frost better, but you need more than just the leading edge black for this to work, that is what black mesh wing covers are for. Also think about search and rescue when considering colors.

As far as props go, if it were my airplane I would give STRONG consideration to a CS prop. I have had tricked out Super Cub, Arctic Tern and 2 Husky's as well as 2 185's and a 180. From owning these airplanes I have learned that the Husky with the CS props are fantastic. I agree completely with what MTV says about the Husky and CS prop. I run my rpm between 1800-1900 rpm and 22-24 inches, I burn 5-6.5 gallons per hour doing around 105-110 mph on 8:50's. My super Cub did 102mph at 8.0 gph with 8:50's spinning a 82x42 Borrer prop. So to accomplish the same distance mission I would need to carry the extra gas in a fixed pitch prop as opposed to a CS prop. Multiply that fuel weight by the number of gallons and you have essentially added that to the empty weight of your airplane. One thing that guys don't mention or think about much here on this site is the importance of MPG (miles per gallon). MPG determines how much weight in fuel you have to carry to complete the mission which determines the weight of your airplane when you release the brakes. 25 pounds of gas is the same as 25 pounds of extra nic naks on your airplane. As far as to which CS prop for your airplane, I can't help you much there since I do not know much about the experimental props on the market. I do like my MT prop's, 2 and 3 blade. I would probably go 2 blade, more efficient, faster in cruise and lighter with same take off and climb. I have had both on my Husky's and this is what I have found. Gotta say, the 2 blade is very very smooth but wow, that 3 blade is silky smooth!

Another thing to consider with MPG is fuel availability. As an example, wanna fly the trench in a stock Super Cub??? Better have the whole fuel gig figured out! MPG is not just about cost of fuel, it is also about availability of fuel out in the boonies. I hate carrying cans!

Anyway, just a couple thoughts. Have fun with the build! Thanks for keep us all updated, it is fun to watch!

That seat is way better than the Savage. I'm jelly of that in itself!

Re: My Backcountry Super Cub-version 2 (SQ)

As Kevin mentioned, I snuck over and got to see his Backcountry Super Cubs Revision 2 kit at the factory last week. If he doesn't want the Lazy Boy option, he can give it to me!!! (it would fit just fine in my beater PA-12 :) ).

3 person Cub, over 9 FEET of flat decking behind the pilot in 1-place configuration (I'm 6'2" and can't reach the end with my arms over my head) and total kit weight of less than 650 pounds (including 20 lb fuel tanks and 18 lb slats, in addition to the 595 lb weight shown). This BCS Cub converts from 3-place to 2-place to 1-place in a matter of seconds. The big hole in the side is a cargo door big enough to load a stretcher. In addition to all this, these BCS Cubs fly super slow with slats and Keller flaps, and are built LIKE A BRICK OUTHOUSE!

Can't wait to see what Kevin is going to do with this beast!!!

But can you leave the cargo door open and have a rear gunner? Haha!

Yep she's mine. Don't foresee using the third seat though.

Re: My BCSC - Version 2 (SQ) updated 8/16

So as our buddy Ranch Pilot referenced, the new BCSC kit with slats and fuel tanks came in under 650lbs. With the goal of keeping this bird under 1150lbs it seems very doable now. What do you think?? :D

Im running a Superior Engine being built by Barrett Performance Engines. I did the O-360, Carbureted with a MA 4-5 leaned and Jet drilled. 9-1 forged pistons and a Cato 86-38 up front. I just made the final decision this morning on the P Mags. Seems like a no brainer and it saves weight. The EarthX battery is also a no brainer.

Tony with TK 1 Racing is currently working on the outboard shock system and tail shock. The cross gear shock is in already as you will see in the pics. The shock system is a bit heavier but I think this is the way of the future for these aircraft and the weight increase is not substantial.

Avionics: The Garmin G3X is waiting to be installed. With a set of the 31″ Bushwheels going on first (they are 40lbs less than 35’s) 35's will come as well soon enough.

Fabric is Stewarts with simple paint.

Prop: I have ordered the Catto 86-38. I will also try the Whirlwind as there are so many opinions out there.

You do the math. How you can not have this bird come in under 1150lbs? I may be crazy to think that this cub could come in under a 1100lbs but as I keep running numbers in my head it too seems possible. I'm betting not thought. So now for that game we all play. I am curious what you think she will come in at? If for no other reason than its fun to speculate. Whats your guess?

Leaned big toward the black and white. Did not mean to post the Reddish Orange one but I sure like it as well anyway.

Re: My BCSC - Version 2 (SQ) updated 8/26

We were talking about tail shocks the just yesterday, looking at a couple of installations.

Personally I think it's worth running the CG numbers to confirm a tail shock is worthwhile. The moment-arm is so long that even a little extra weight back there can really change the total moment and eat into your useful load.

Tailwheel damage is constantly on my mind landing off airport, as you're basically left stuck. I always try my best to ensure it's the last point to touch the ground, as slow as possible, ideally less than 10kts.
