Re: Another "I bought a 180" thread... (and WV-CO trip repor

I should clarify as I told Asa it felt a little heavy. I'm a little OCD when it comes to weight, so everything is likely a little heavy to me. I believe (Asa can chime in) his 57' is upper 1600's on paper, I would guess it's low 1700's on the scales. Plenty fine for a good backcountry 180. Performance of a "stock" 180 is always great, and this one doesn't disappoint.

One can carry a tow bar around, but I am with others in adding the tail pull handles to the short list of wanted mods.

How much is "a little heavy"?
Frankly, I don't know how some guys are keeping their 180's down in the mid-1500's with BW's and other heavy mods,
but that's what they're reporting. FWIW my 1953 model (with 850's & some mods) comes in at 1652# empty, with the CG at 34.63".

1676 on paper, never on scales.

I was more referring to the lack of emphasis on weight reduction of the previous owners, for example, installation of DME, ADF, and full nice interior.

Asa- Glad to hear the purchase went smoothly and the weather worked out great for the flight home. Looks like it was well kept and a solid 180! I did a very similar flight a few years earlier.

I look forward to checking out the new plane the next time you're in the area. Enjoy!

Thanks! Matt told me the story of your purchase.. I'd say mine went a little smoother and glad we didn't have to do a marathon flight like you all. Although, you have a great story and that's all that matters, right? hahaha

Asa-

Congrats on finding such a nice 180! Great trip report! I second the motion... put lots of gas in it and fly. Be careful of those 'might as well do this now' urges;)

Hey Asa - Congrats and great trip report! Looks like the weather held up for you and Matt. I'll second soyanarchisto - this is going to be a great spring/summer with all these 180's buzzing around. :D

Awesome! Great trip report too. Glad to see yet another cool airplane coming into CO.

Maybe we need a Colorado BCP get-together. I think there's enough of us out here to fill up a hundred-dollar burger joint, and/or local bar for an evening.

Asa,

Congrats on the new bird, it was great to see her in person, meet you, and see Matt again. You will love the 57. I sure love mine. Glad you guys had a good time and you got your signoff. Keep the pics and TR's coming!

Hopefully next time you come back the guest quarters will be done and you will be able to stay longer.

Fly safe!

Since I had to buy a new landing light, I took Pinecone's suggestion and went for an LED one to avoid this in the future. I'll wait for the taxi light to bite the dust before I replace that will LED as well.

And so it begins...

Excellent! Now since that bulb will outlast the life of the airplane turn it on and leave it on! Fly with it on all the time with very few exceptions. Great anti collision device.

Even better, get a Precise Flight Pulselite module and have it installed, which is even more visible when that bright light is flashing. Oh, and don't forget to take the time to properly aim the lights--makes a huge difference, although it's a bit time consuming.

Great trip report, and it sounds like a good purchase. I don't know anyone who can handle a 180 better than Matt (from outside observation only--I haven't ridden with him), so that was a wise way of ferrying it back home.

On a Colorado get together, I can set one up again at GXY, if people are interested.

There are several options re flashing landing lights, some are more cost effective than others.
But I agree that a flashing light is much more visible than a on-all-the-time light, LED or not.

Yep, I agree with the flashing, I have pulse feature on my airplane, VERY visible from what everyone who sees me says. Pulse or not, just make sure to turn em on!

Congratulations, Asa! That's a great trip report, and your excitement is rewarding to see. I bought my 180 back in August and haven't since stopped smiling when flying. They are remarkable planes that do lots of things well while satisfying the tailwheel itch. Enjoy the heck out of her!

Enjoyed the report. We bought one home to Louisiana from California last summer. It went down for some needed attention. Its getting real close to flying again.
