Here is one from the Chicken Strip. Kinda like the place and try to visit often. It was fun chasing Coyote Ugly around the desert on the way in. As nice as the weather looks in the Video, we were in for a surprise later in the day.
The second to the last photo in the video is of Fish Valley hot springs. We left there only to have the wind pick up to about 45kts, knocking the crap out of us. Realizing we were sort on range due to the headwinds, Pop's suggested we see if the local bordello still had fuel as he had used it as a fuel stop before (likely excuse). We were sure hopeful to get out of the sky as the turbulence was down right nasty. Circling we realized there were too many wires about so we continued into to Mina, landed and taxied into to town.
The gas station was closed. There was another on the other end of town. Pop's called his buddy who we found out was driving a water truck west of town and said he'd be there to help us out in a while. We decided to grab a burger. That turned out to be the best one I had in a long time, a welcome morsel. It was getting late in the day and the wind was getting worse.
The water truck showed up with some gas cans so we made a few trips back and forth standing on the running boards holding on with one hand with a 5-gallon jug in the other. By the time we got both planes fueled with enough gas to make Austin, it was dark. And I mean dark! With the head lights from the water truck trying to illuminate the runway, we back taxied. By the time we got to the other end of the runway, the dust was blowing so hard, we could just barely make out the head lights. Off we went into the wild blue darkness for Austin. Then it began to snow and dam was it ever cold. we slogged along in obvious MVFR with the only thing keeping our optimism up was the lights of towns visible off the left wings.
we made it to Austin, but not an easy fight or one we would care to do again, of course the wind was still blowing hard and the turbulence continued. Anyway, we had a great time at the hot springs and would do that part again in an instant. I carry a sleeping bag now, just in case.
