Are you going to HSF?

Hey Mike,

I have been so busy i have been off this board a bit. What is HSF? I have a booth at the Aviation expo in palm springs but that's about it at the moment. I am just now getting back to finishing my PPL after a 2 year hiatus, so I have been flying like crazy this last few weeks to get done ASAP.

I just spoke to Bill from EZ Flap and suggested he contact you for testing his flap handle in a Bearhawk, but he said he already sent it out. ha ha small world. He and I are in the same EAA chapter. I hope you like his product. I have only used it in his plane so I don't have any familiarity or comparison between a standard Cessna setup, but I thought it was a cool addition. I like his 56 172 much better than the 172N I rent.

Take care,

Marc

Re: Blackrock's Video Page

Hi Marc,

HSF = High Sierra Fly In. You won't want to miss this one! Kevin has a smorgasbord of fun events lined up for us; check out all the details on this thread:

https://www.backcountrypilot.org/community/forum/latest/updated-8-26-15-6th-annual-high-sierra-fly-in-2015-oct-22-25-17495

You can hop in with me for a few flights and we'll use your mount for some more videos. For everyone's information that doesn't already have one, Marc sells an excellent wing-strut mount. It is solid as a rock and a vast improvement over others I've used. Simple to use, too. The above GoPro video,s above, that were taken from the wing position, were made using Marc's mount. Any vibration in those is from the strut, not the mount. The O-540 prop blast coupled with me mounting the camera mid strut is the cause of that. For some reason, I mounted it in a different position than usual that day.

Marc, thanks for talking with Bill. I'm excited to try the EZ Flap when it arrives. It should make a big difference

For that matter, since your both on the same airport, maybe you can ride to the HSF together! Hope to see you there and if not, to meet up with you soon. PS, the straps arrived today - thank you.

Cheers,
Mike

Re: Blackrock's Video Page

This video is a collection of photo's from a 2013 trip to Stehekin, WA. Many of you may recognize this cast of characters. This slide show is dedicated to the memory of Noreen MacBean who tragically passed in a bicycle accident this summer. Noreen was such an uplifting force and it was such a joy to be with her, Allen, and Stan on this trip. I believe everyone on this trip would agree as well as all of you who knew Noreen.

A short story, that was a bit comical, and we all had a good laugh out of it, especially Noreen: She and her moms dog Chuck were standing on a large log that angled from the river bank out into the current. Most of us had stood on it at point or another to watch spawning Kokane swim past. One afternoon sitting around camp, we heard a loud splash. Noreen and Chuck had somehow fell into the river. They both went for a swim in the swift cold water. They made it back to shore drenched and cold. Noreen was a really good sport about the event and remained in high spirits despite the circumstances. She was truly a bright light in this world.

Noreen Chuck, and the log:

Re: Blackrock's Video Page

Went out yesterday morning to land a couple of unimproved spots close to home on private property. Nice views and good places to just take it all in. This video was made with the Cloudbase Engineering wing mount from BCP member Addicted2climbing. It works well and I especially like this mounting location since it shows the pilot, landing gear, and still has a forward view. The camera is a GoPro Hero 3+ with a neutral density filter attached to the outside of the case. That eliminated the odd prop artifact.

After last take off in the video, I kept the camera rolling and went to pick Maverick up and we landed some new spots on his ranch. When I got home and reviewed the video, the camera had stopped on its own at 17:25 on all the videos. I thought I'd lost most all of the landing clips. Turns out the camera also restarted on its own, and did get most of the landing/TO's. My son told me it was probably overheating and to use the skeleton back for the case instead of the waterproof one. So I'll try that next time; hope that fixes it. I get really frustrated with this camera at times!!! It lost all of the mountain landings at Austin!

Anyway, I've added music to this one so hope y'all enjoy.

Re: Blackrock's Video Page

These are from the 2011 Caveman Ranch fly in, (Southern Utah) and were taken from around that area. Nothing fancy here, just some video of the features unique to this beautiful area, no sound. Please excuse the "jello" effect in some of these. They were taken with an older Drift camera. Glad the POV camera technology has improved so dramatically since.

Re: Blackrock's Video Page

This contains one of those ah-crap moments, a low-level hazard; BFB's at 11 o'clock! You can spot them to my left and low, just before the round bales. I was still shaking after landing. They looked a LOT closer from my seat then they do in the video,! it happens so fast, there is barley time to react, let alone spot all the bogies! Slowed down to 0.125 speed for that section. Otherwise nice music and more meadow landings...

The saying "hours of boredom interspersed with moments of shear terror" comes to mind.

Re: Blackrock's Video Page

Cameron, thanks for the love on the previous video :D That's my best video so far, IMHO.

The video below condenses an hour plus flight into 4 minutes; Sulphur Creek Ranch to Moose Creek. For those used to flying Idaho, no doubt you've done at least a good portion of this flight and it's no big deal. For those who haven't, you might enjoy the scenery and terrain. Moose Creek is a great wilderness destination but primitive camping only.

Shearer airstrip comes up on the left before arriving at Moose Creek.

Re: Blackrock's Video Page

Well, near the end of the build, I got lazy and just decided to use battery operated red LED's for cabin lights. I keep a white flashlight handy too. Those little lights work well and are just about perfect for low-intensity night use. They are still hanging in there, battery wise, after nearly 7-years.

Nice! The best solution is a simple one.

I've got bullet lights mounted on the wing roots for my cabin lights. They get really hot though, I might try to find an LED bulb for them.
