Re: C170B Trainer - Resto begins

Been noodling in my "free" time on the restomod 170, and weight keeps coming off... To date, I have recorded 160lbs taken out in garbage bags... Still lots to go for sure!

I also stumbled upon a first run A1A O-360 w/ 750hrs on it. Gonna swap 6 for 4. Dialed the crank at 0.001 and a guarantee on the case and internals. Snapped it up so it looks like the Trainer will have a 180hp motor up front.

The O-300 is coming out and is for sale. That has 553 hrs on a factory reman. No prop strike and still flying. Would be FWF incl mount, all accessories, and prop. $500 donation to BCP if it sells to a member. Image.

That's going to be a great machine when it's done. Looks good already.

Have you installed your Horton already? If not, I would give strong consideration to a Sportsman instead of a Horton.

Just a thought.

Re: C170B Trainer - Resto begins

Greg,

Good choice on the engine swap. That will take the airplane from being a nice trainer to a very friendly tiger of a trainer. Keep it to under 1350 lbs and it’ll impress everyone who flys it or watches.

Do yourself a favor and toss the idea of the Horton. We take them off and toss em in the bin. Sportsman is a dramatic improvement on the pre-camber Cessna wing. Also, (depending on the weight of your bird) look seriously at the WingX. Since you are in CA, it is already approved. You will get a GW bump and a real nice performance bump. Its is right around the corner for FAA approval also.

Re: C170B Trainer - Resto begins

Ok, ok no Horton, Sportsman it is you guys win but I'm sticking with the piano keys I just like the look sorrrrry and rest assured the design will gain WIDE condemnation with the self appoint keepers of the 170 community.

Re: C170B Trainer - Resto begins

Keep holding your breath on the GW increase in the US. Should be a no brainer, but they’ve had it in for approval almost forever now with no help from the FAA . Ihope it gets done, but I wouldn’t bet on it.

Also, before you install wing extensions, Bear in mind the airplane may or may not fit in most T Hangars any longer. And if it will fit, you’ll be replacing position lights on tips regularly.

May not be a big deal if you park in a Hangar with a big door, but.....a lot of places only have t-hangars available.
