Cessna 170 with Wing-X

Have you modified your aircraft? STC? STOL Kit? Major rebuild from just a data plate?

Cessna 170 with Wing-X

Anybody flown a 170 that has been equipped with Wing-X? I'm interested in a pirep. I don't need anything other than that.

Unless YOU have, please don't comment. STFU for those of you who just have to comment on every f@#$ing topic.

Re: Cessna 170 with Wing-X

I’ve only flown a 170 once. It did not have a Wing-X mod. In fact, I’ve never flown a plane with Wing-X. Maybe put VG’s on the plane and possibly a Sportsman STOL cuff and see how that works first? The Wing-X makes your wings longer. It might make fitting the plane into a hangar more difficult.

Re: Cessna 170 with Wing-X

170 info is all I'm asking for. Not 180. Not 185 or 206. Is that asking too much from this group?

Particularly ornery this morning Big Greg are we? This is the problem with the web because we cant see into the sarcasm because the web wires filter it out! No one really knows what a big cuddly bear you are in person... #-o

The issue (as you know) is that the WingX isn't certified (yet) here in the US, only in Canada. That said, there is a guy at the next airport over that has a 180HP 170B where they miraculously appeared. I have flown with him, and it keeps up with my WIngX 180 in the climbs and is a performer. He falls short on the speed which is to be expected due to the motor differences. I have not flown that bird first hand.

Yes Paul (WingX) has been saying certification is right around the corner for as long as I have been talking to him, but last month he ASSURED me he had just one small paperwork bit and he was done. I take it with a grain of salt, but its is certainly exciting for 170B owners.

Incidentally, the downside of the FAA cert for the WingX is going to be reduced GW increase for 170Bs in the US only versions and ZERO GW increase in the 172/175. This is where he had to give some ground in order to get it passed. I forget exactly what Paul said, but I believe that the 170B will only get 100lb bump, and that's with the 180hp only... but that's better than nothing! The real benefit seen will be from the extra wing.

I am going back and forth about installing it on my 170B Trainer project. I love the performance bump I got in the 180, but the roll rate really takes a hit. The Sportsman and WingX combo also adds just over 30lbs, so thats something to consider. I will most likely install it for the reduced T/O roll and climb perf.

Re: Cessna 170 with Wing-X

All I asked for is if anyone has flown a 170 with the wing-x. That is all. I already know all the other issues. I tried being very specific for all you special needs cases. Obviously the family tree is a stump based on the replies.

Lighten up Francis! If it was so important to you I did not see a post at the 170 club for this. Ask your own kind or shut the fuck up and buy a 180 not a Maule. Skaly I am disappointed.

I just want to reply because of how rude your original post is.

Re: Cessna 170 with Wing-X

PA1185 sent me a PM suggesting getting in touch with Wing-X and asking if they could put me in touch with some 170 drivers with the mod.
Excellent idea! Wish I would have thought of that, but then all this wonderful sharing wouldn't have taken place.

Re: Cessna 170 with Wing-X

It's September in Alaska. Can be stressful on residents with must-do hunting, fishing, gathering berries, crap all over the property that needs picking up, promised but undone projects, birds leaving, and snow a few weeks away. What's not to like about a peaceful cold winter ahead that lets us put it off until next year?

Maybe Wind-X will have some Canadian C-170 drivers with the extensions that can offer advice. Hope so as the mod seems popular. They won't be as crabby as Fall arrives later down there so that might help.

It's already pretty well here judging by the temps the last few mornings. But we try to be less crabby down/up here in general... haha.

Re: Cessna 170 with Wing-X

As funny as this thread became, the OP, for all his bluntness, does have a point. Often people are compelled to respond with hearsay or barely related anecdotes for a question on a very specific topic. It can add noise and make the accurate answer, should it ever be proffered, difficult to pick out.

It's fun to participate and discuss, but keep that in mind. Thanks.
