Hello all - new here. I'm on my second '56 C-182 just purchased. Had one 20 years ago, then a succession of other planes then back to a different '56. I have a few things I'm working on. First, this plane had no grab handles. I saw this post and bought the material recommended. My progress ground to a halt when trying to figure out how the original poster (thank you!) wound the Kevlar to make the handles... I'm no knot expert. Were there two pieces of Kevlar used? Approximate length? Anybody have more suggestions on how to do these "wraps" to make these? Any suggestions welcome!

Resurrecting this old thread - cause it's time again for me to make oh-shit-handles for the one hunnerd and eighty...

Pretty sure it's 1 piece of kevlar. And since it's 12-strand hollow core - to make it look super nice - and removable in an emergency - put an eye splice in the end and/or connect it up with a soft shackle. Lots of videos of how to do this on the youtubes.

The preferred knot (kevlar and dyneema don't hold knots well) to make soft shackles is the button or diamond knot - not a monkey fist. If done right the shackle is twice the strength of the breaking strength of the single line (because it's a loop).

Those are reasonably priced & look pretty nice.
Spec says 11" long, so I'm guessing about 9-1/2" centers on the mounting holes.

Those look nice and they have a good color selection - for that price and the generous Amazon return policy - only way to know for sure is to order a set and give them a try to see if they will be to tight or not, meaning can you get you hand between the strap and the interior of the plane to get a grip. They look like a great affordable option.

There is also the not so affordable option of these - the picture on the website is actually of mine - I worked with these guys (paracord guy and Bushliner) to make my set and now they sell them. They are not the cheapest - but give you a more stock-ish look and those titanium ends are nice. Anywho they are a full AMU for each per handle… so again not the budget choice, but another option.

I ordered a set from Amazon, as you mentioned with the return policy what do I have to lose! - I will report back with how they fit

I’d be willing to bet the grommets on those Amazon ones blow out after a few 180 pound pulls.

Casey makes a great product. I have them in my 185 and have given 4 sets gifts. Highly recommend.

Can you post a pic, and an idea on pricing?

The boarding straps don't look like they'd be too tough to make,
either paracord, leather strap, or whatever.
The key would be getting an appropriate end fitting.
I like the stock cessna ones,
but I imagine a well-stocked hardware store would have something that would work.
FWIW I'm not convinced they need to be titanium.

Casey’s are made by him with the metal fittings included for half price of bushliner. I believe para and Kevlar material. Plus Casey is local to us, Eric. He makes them how ever you want them. I wanted my first set he sent me to be a little longer and he replaced them no questions asked.

FWIW the boarding strap mounting holes are about 11-1/4" apart on my 53 180.
