Re: Cessna Grab Handles

I tried but failed to post a picture. I will attest Casey makes a fine product. I've ordered 5 sets from him in the last couple years

I'm considering buying them - has anyone tried these to see if they will fit?

Those look nice and they have a good color selection - for that price and the generous Amazon return policy - only way to know for sure is to order a set and give them a try to see if they will be to tight or not, meaning can you get you hand between the strap and the interior of the plane to get a grip. They look like a great affordable option.

There is also the not so affordable option of these - the picture on the website is actually of mine - I worked with these guys (paracord guy and Bushliner) to make my set and now they sell them. They are not the cheapest - but give you a more stock-ish look and those titanium ends are nice. Anywho they are a full AMU for each per handle… so again not the budget choice, but another option.

Wait, an AMU as in an Aviation Monitary Unit? $1k? Man I can’t afford to fly Back Country. A factory new leather wrapped grab handle for a Cirrus is 60 bucks. Launching the 185 off a cliff now

I think I did this correctly. Here are Caseys' handles.

I really like them.

Those look good, but amazon sez 11" long.
The mounting holes in my 53 180 are 11-1/4" apart so don't think they'd fit.
Casey's are probably the way to go, if you don't like / don't have the stock ones.

Re: Cessna Grab Handles

Casey is a fellow pilot and drives a 180 I believe and fishes. Why not spend a few bucks on a known quantity and get in touch with him. You will not be disappointed. He get's it and provides a quality product.

I would respectfully suggest you choose color for these things……hands are grubby things, so these things tend to change color over time.

Re: Cessna Grab Handles

FWIW I just measured the stock (?) "assist straps" out of my C180. They measure just about 12-1/4" center to center of the mounting holes.
My IPC shows 3 different part numbers for the "strap- assist", including 2 part numbers allegedly both applicable to my 53 model, so your mileage may vary.

Re: Cessna Grab Handles

Stumbled across this forum and thread and thought I would share. I’ve been making assist handles for a couple years. I’ve always used paracord and stainless d-rings until recently someone asked if I could make them a set using Kevlar. They sent me the materials to use including the canyon dancer strap rings for mounting ends. I really like the strap rings and have been searching for something better than the d-rings. Anyway, to the point of the post, since kevlar doesn’t melt like paracord had to come up with a way to finish and secure the cord ends. What I did was put a dab of epoxy adhesive on the end and then used heavy duty shrink tube I got from a local electrical supply store. Thought it worked pretty slick and wanted to share.

Re: Cessna Grab Handles

The heat shrink is brilliant. Thanks for the tip.

Looking at the grab handles I have (stock 185), I wonder what the screws go into. Is there a nut plate that’s secured back there? A nut with only plastic holding it all in? A nut on the other side of the pillar, waiting to disappear when the screw is removed?

Recovering from a recent surgery, I got so bored that I started making paracord bracelets. This is a logical next step, provided the attachment is workable.

There is a nut plate riveted into the door post. So just pull the screws out and out them back in. No need to worry about the nut falling down.
