Re: Chicken Strip Work Party (SAT OCT-15)

Our group from the Kern River Valley will be going in on Friday afernoon. We will be going through Lone Pine around 2:00 to 3:00 in the afternoon and we have three open seats. So any one that wants to fly-in and help you can meet us at Lone Pine on friday afternoon.

Everyone that is coming to help please remember that you are all responsable for your own camping gear, FOOD and DRINKS. THIS IS A BYO-STUFF.

The current weather forcast is for some clouds with temps in the high-80's to low 90's. Should be a great weekend. :D

As of this afternoon (Monday the 10th) we have 21 workers signed up. :D

We still need someone from down south to go by Riverside and help Glidergeek bring out some equipment. :(

You had to schedule this the weekend of my wedding anniversary didn't you. My wife is generally a very understanding woman but she won't let me out of this. :D

Re: Chicken Strip Work Party (SAT OCT-15)

Monday was good but yesterday was not so good. :( We lost 6-people yester day and we are now down to 15-people for the work party. Any last minute workers please call or e-mail. For those that want to fly in we have seats into the Chicken Strip from Bishop and Lone Pine. I and others will be coming through Lone Pine Friday afternoon and John Kounis will be leaving from Bishop on Saturday morning early. A second group will be coming through Lone Pine on Saturday Morning early. So if you want to help get to Bishop or Lone Pine on Friday some time and I’ll get you in.

Well, I really hate to be the type of person to run my mouth like I did early on in this thread and maybe another and I really truly wanted to help as much as I can. But, because of a change in work schedule this weekend, I will not be able to join the work party this weekend. Sorry to disappoint!

BUT........ If there is anybody flying up to Lone Pine or Bishop first thing Saturday morning from one of the LA, OC, or Riverside airports and flying back Saturday afternoon/night that has a extra seat, I will reconsider. But also, I must be back to SoCal Saturday night to report to work early Sunday morning.

Re: Chicken Strip Work Party (SAT OCT-15)

Trying really hard to make this! I am flying to Utah in the AM for the world premier of the new Warren Miller ski film in Salt Lake tomorrow night. Flying home on Saturday morning early.

I just dont want to be the guy who flies in after all the hard work is done. In the event that is the case, I am assuming cold frosty treats would be the preferred asset to bring everyone. Also assuming you guys will be on the local frequency if you see a plane come in for a low fly by. At that time you could advise if its open. If its not open at that time (mid afternoon) I may end up climbing in Owens Saturday afternoon as I dont think anyone will be driving out at that time.

Question, are you guys camping out on Saturday night as well? Sounds like the strip may be open in the late afternoon Sat? If so, I will bring treats for everyone!

Re: Chicken Strip Work Party (SAT OCT-15)

AKT,

Hope it works out that we can have the strip open by the time you come by. If it turns out that you can land, we'll save some rocks for you that need to be painted white.
122.9 is the frequency for the other Death Valley landing locations....so I suppose that would be as local a frequency as there is.
I believe it is most everyone's plan to camp Saturday night.
Hope to cross paths.

See ya,

Dave

I'm sure others will have a portable NAV/Comm, too. But, I'll have mine with me. And I understand others have tight schedules and may not be in the best of shape to be out in the hot sun doing some manual labor. I won't be one of the ones offended if anybody wants to show up in the late afternoon if the airstrip get's open. In fact, it would be cool to see some planes come in for the first time in months! I'll try to have my camera ready :D

I got a better idea how bout you fly into KBIH early Saturday ride in with some of the work crew and be part of it. :D Then IF they allow/open it back up somebody that's going back out can drop you off at BIH and you can flyin. People keep telling us they are going to help and then they call or email back and say they cannot. I had a guy call me Wednesday saying he was going to bring a Bobcat and yesterday he emailed and said he couldn't make it. Rick Lund has been putting up with that (canceled commitments) since we started this effort.

We'd hate for anybody to assume that it will be open until they (NPS) say it is.

Glidergeek,

Are you planning on 2.5 to 3 hrs. into the springs from Lone Pine on Saturday morning? I'm thinking that's about what it should be.

I'm kinda planning 2-2.5 from Big Pine in. I'm staying in Lone Pine tonight and leaving out about 7am- 45 miles to Big Pine. Rick Lund is driving in this afternoon and going to give a road report when he gets in there.

Re: Chicken Strip Work Party (SAT OCT-15)

I'm flying down to Bishop mid-day, then driving in with a Bishop local this afternoon also. I've had att cell service standing right on the chicken strip this last February...not sure if that is still the case. Is Rick taking a sat phone, or planning on cell coverage?

I've got room in the 182 if anyone is in the Reno area, trying to figure out how to get down.....pretty short notice though..

I'm not figurin' out the picture link thing quite yet....
