Re: Crash at Johnson Creek

Hope everyone is OK. Tom - do you know if the field is open?

Mike is at Dillon right now in the RV-4 (I had to work) and plans to fly over there around 6:30 this evening. Mike and I have been following you since you left us from Mid Valley. Glad we met you guys - come back through on your way home.

Re: Crash at Johnson Creek

Sorry to hear about the crash!! :(

I called the caretakers at 3U2 and the field is open. They said there are about 85 airplanes there already!

Re: Crash at Johnson Creek

Sad news.

Prayers sent for all involved.

At least it does not sound like a midair. I've been there for a midair and it's terrible.

As much as I love JC, I stay away for the big fly-ins. Too much traffic for my peace of mind.

Also, in the back of my mind, I fear this (and other backcountry) airports getting closed someday, perhaps sooner rather than later.

Re: Crash at Johnson Creek

Dammit this sucks! I been avoiding BCP and SC because I had a bad feeling in my stomach something was going to happen. This pretty much solidifies that when you get 100 airplanes together the odds skyrocket that something bad will happen. After BCP 13, HSF 14, SC 15 I really don't know what to say. I hope everyone makes a full recovery. As much as I enjoy you guys I won't be returning to a big fly-in anytime soon.

Oh please. What a bunch of whiny bullshit. If I lived in your country, Id go to every meet there was, fuck the fatalities. Stay the fuck alert. As someone said on here, and I quote " fly predictably" and move your head and eyes around. Best advice I ever read!!! You live in a Country with endless possibilities and endless airstrips everywhere. I live in a Country where selfish millionaires buy up airstrips and close them down. We in Canada lose airfields everyday from immigrant jerk wads who seize opportunities given to them by our Country, then give fuck all back. They learn the way of their home land. Fuck, screw and take .I look at America and see you are truly blessed.

Re: Crash at Johnson Creek

First of all, thanks for busting that "polite Canadian" stereotype. I knew y'all had it in you. Second, as to flying predictably, I can do that all day long but if the "other" guy doesn't, then as you put it, it gets me fuck. Talk to Dan (Mr Steel) about flying predictably at Johnson Creek some time. He has a helluva story to tell. There are a lot of really experienced high time types that won't go to these fly-ins, there are a lot of the same types that will. They run their risk/reward analysis and decide whether or not it's worth the risk. Keep your fucking name calling to yourself and let's just hope no one was seriously injured.

Re: Crash at Johnson Creek

If this was not a collision, how would this accident reinforce your decision to not go to the fly ins?

Who is surprised ? Did we just get here ?
Trains trucks cars crash, boats, ships are sinking. Don't go back to Kansas, Its changed.
How many crashes are caused every day from Tex-ting or idiots ?
I think there is room to improve by agreeing to standard procedures In and Out of strips,
airports and fly ins. but machines and people will fail and have accidents.
That's life on this rock on fire spinning through space.
Un Happy people in every culture have tried forever to regulate others who have different fun.
BC and all pilots are subject to being slammed every day for doing something a jealous one isn't.
I know of a jealous old crabby bat closing a rural airport claiming a rare bird lives near.
God is Great Beer is Good People are crazy, Get out there, Never give up.

Re: Crash at Johnson Creek

Wow.... Why all the gun slingin ? I don't think Joey belittled anyone for having a fly in, nor attending one. He just stated his current position on where it fits in his life... I happen to share the same position, although probably for very different reasons. Although the big top fly ins don't have a place in my life, I truly appreciate guys like Kevin Quin and the likes who have the balls and selflessness to put these shin digs together for all and anyone.

Having had the extreme displeasure of pulling more than one person out of a mangled helicopter, I can say that there is nothing'whinny' about trying to avoid a repeat... Again, not really my reasoning, which has more to do with a mission seeking peace and tranquillity... But..To each his own ...

Oh and one last thought, it is my opinion that Canada probably has the largest share of  Backcountry flying in its purest form in the world... So what's all the whining about?

Take care, Rob

(Currently on a backcountry wanderbout without all the big tops ;) )

Re: Crash at Johnson Creek

when I first joined the BCP site years ago it was a lot smaller and had a lot less folks posting here and BCP fly ins were a lot smaller... I've been going to JC since 1998 almost every summer... been there during super cub fly ins, Maule fly ins when they had them, BCP fly ins and 180/185 fly ins... been into most every strip up there and caught a lot of trout..Met a ton of folks I now call friends.... most are considered the "legends" mentioned in a earlier post... I would fly with Pops, grasstrip pilot, Oregon Maule, Gump, and a whole lot of "Legends" who left this site when it started to attract 100 hr pilots and those who never have flown off a paved runway or into a canyon... I;ve been at JC and watched folks crash several times.. seen dumb moves by pilots I would never fly near or with...hell I"ve had my share of fender benders in my plane but I limit my attendance at any event to 50 or so airplanes and I don't attend any in a narrow canyon in the mountains... I"ll get a lot of criticism on my point of view but I have learned that large gaggles of planes contain way too many folks who are not vigilant or take way too many chances... we get real sensitive about not saying anything on causes or what happened in any of these incidents but word of mouth gets out and causes emerge... I just recently watched the video of the mid air at JC in 13... makes my skin crawl.... I pray the two guys in the wrecked Pacer yesterday come out ok in this. I'll be headed to JC on the first of July after all the cubbies are gone and when there isn't any fly ins or gatherings... Usually a few old friends are there and I can actually get into a shower every night without waiting in line... nuf said...peace out....
