crash today near bear valley idaho (valley county)

No real information yet on the local news, all the TV stations have a link to the same press release from the Valley County Sheriff, and it doesn't say much.

http://www.kboi2.com/news/Four-people-s ... 67995.html

So far they are reporting a "4 place plane" crashed at 3:30 this afternoon, with 4 survivors, no details about injuries. Ch 9 news reported that it is taking longer than usual to get information about the crash "because of the remote area the accident happened in", what they really mean is, it's a 2-hour drive from Boise, and cell phones don't work there. Expect more information to be available tomorrow morning.

24 hours later, still no real information available. The latest press release from the county says it is a 1947 Stinson model 108, registered in Boise, and that 2 people are hospitalized with unknown injuries and 2 people were uninjured.

Re: crash today near bear valley idaho (valley county)

More details finally.

http://www.ktvb.com/news/Small-plane-cr ... 67555.html

Apparently they were taking off at a density altitude of 8,500-9,000 ft. had difficulty taking off, and hit a tree with the landing gear. 2 people uninjured, 1 treated and released, and 1 in stable condition at St. Lukes in Boise. It could have been a lot worse.

holy crap batman, we need more power. great video and good the pilot flew all the way to the crash. bad the pilot didn't circle to gain altitude before flying into higher terrain. bad the pilot thought he had enough power for the mission. monday morning qb

Re: crash today near bear valley idaho (valley county)

wow. Lucky they are all OK. But I'm pretty sure I'd never let a video like that be released. If I had a choice in the matter.
Edit
Explanation for my comment. Plane crash videos are around and I'm OK with that, but personally could do without the bodies laying there and close examination of the injuries.

Re: crash today near bear valley idaho (valley county)

It makes me weak in the knees.
Me too. The first time I took off from Marble, CO, I got out of ground effect too soon before I'd built enough speed to climb, at a DA around 10,000'. I missed the trees, got the nose down, and built speed so that climbing on out of the valley was easy. But this video brings back the uncomfortable feelings I had until I was able to do that.

Since then, I've been lots more careful to get a head of steam going on any short field before leaving ground effect. Once bit, forever shy. The thing was, I knew better--lots of years in the high country, but definitely not thinking that day.

Geez, that got a little graphic there..... I have to wonder how the person laying there bleeding felt about getting videoed? Anyone know, did they have shoulder harnesses? Sure didn't look like it judging by that guys face, damn.

Re: crash today near bear valley idaho (valley county)

The near minute long takeoff ground roll left me with a sickened sinking feeling in my stomach. The video just gets worse from there as the plane fails to climb and the terrain keeps rising. A question for your stinson drivers out there... I am assuming this plane did NOT have the 0-470 motor conversion?

Re: crash today near bear valley idaho (valley county)

Wow, there is no way he should have tried that if the densitiy altitude was really 9k feet.... especially with 4 people. That's a dash 3 Stinson so it should have the 165hp Franklin. My dad has the same plane and it does not like high altitudes with a heavy weight. We both took off in the evening from McCall at a fairly heavy weight and 7200ft density altutude, we both had to circle and catch thermals over the mountains to the east to reach 9500ft and head to Johnson creek. It probably took us 20 minutes to reach that altitude. They should show this video to every student pilot to teach them about the dangers of density altitude and overloading an airplane. Fly light and early or don't fly at all. I'm glad everyone survived.

Re: crash today near bear valley idaho (valley county)

I can remember taking off from Gardner MT in my 108 hp PA 12 on a Saturday afternoon in August. Had a friend in the back that weighed 225 or so and we wanted to take pictures of Yellowstone. We circled and circled and the thing just couldn't get above 8000 feet as I remember so we gave up and landed. Next morning was probably in the 40's, put a light weight cousin in the back and popped up to 12,000 ft no problem and got the pictures taken.

This video is a great reminder of the importance/consequences of the decisions we make as pilots. Obviously our brains need to be engaged-and not in the 'this is the way I always do it' mode that is SO EASEY to relax into....
We all know the human results could have been a lot worse. Chalk one up for the old tuff tube 'n rag airplanes.

A great video for pilots-but don' let my wife see it!!
