Grass strips in the Texas Hill Country?

Hey y'all. :)

I'm getting ready to head out on another (shorter) grass strip tour and still hope to find interesting grass strips in the Texas Hill Country. I'm also trying to find grass strips with fuel along the Mississippi River south of Memphis down to the Gulf. If I could figure out  how to post a map of my proposed route here, I'd post it here.

Any suggestions about grass airfields?

Thanks! :)

Re: Grass strips in the Texas Hill Country?

Hey Diana,

I lived in North-Central Texas for 3 years (until recently, when i got to move back to Alaska 8) ). All the grass strips i found in the hill country (and about everywhere else in Texas) are private strips. I actually made a few calls, but never got "permission", no one wants to get sued and i can't say i blame them. The only public grass strip i found was 3T0, cedar mills, on lake Texoma. It's not in the hill country, but is a neat, well maintained strip next to the marina. Good food and a nice place to stay if you get down that way. There is a picture of the strip in my photo gallery.

Good luck with your trip!

Thanks, Chris! I found a few public grass strips and a few private, plus there is the grass runway at Llano I'll have to try out...everyone says the BBQ is good there. :) I landed at Cedar Mills a year ago...what a neat place! We walked to the restaurant...they had good food, like you said. :) I'd like to stay there at a cabin next to the runway sometime. If the storms chase me east of my route, I may get that chance! :D

Do you know anything about Biggin Hill (TA67), at Shallowater near Lubbock? Someone years ago suggested I land there, but I'm not sure if there is anything to see or do there, and now I can't remember who invited me. :D

Re: Grass strips in the Texas Hill Country?

Your right, i had forgotten about Llano #-o .

I have been in there before, nice place. On our second visit, the car wasn't available and it's a LONG walk to town. Besides, the Hard-8 BBQ in Stephenville was a lot closer and just as good as Coopers. The Hard-8 keeps 2 golf carts at the FBO, or if both are gone, they will come get you. Also it's maybe a half mile from the ramp, so not that bad of a walk

Don't know much about TA67 except it's a private strip. Give them a call, ya never know =D>

Re: Grass strips in the Texas Hill Country?

There is a nice strip on an Island on the north end of Lake Buchanan near Burnett TX. Here is a link to a google map of it

https://maps.google.com/maps/myplaces?l ... 0&t=h&z=16

Look for the strip on the island in the lower center of the sat image. It has about 900 usable feet. It is pretty good but in a Citabria I would want at least 8.00 tires (better 8.50) due to sand at one end and don't go after a rain (not that it ever rains there anymore). It is on Lower Colorado River Authority land and they have never complained about us landing there in the past.

Diana

When you making the trip?

Email "Barmstormer" here he lives there and has charted most grass strips. He had a thread here as well about Texas grass strips with fuel.

My wife and I have a small grass runway on the San Antonio sectional chart (TE17). You're more than welcome to stop by whenever you'd like. The length is 2,200 feet. Have a great day!

Little late after your post, but yeah it's closed for good now. Official Jan 1 I believe? Sad stuff, there's a lot of history at that old place!! Good thing I did some playing around over there during Christmas break.

Sweeeet I'll buzz by if I'm ever down that way! (I'm in the Austin area). Might land if it looks like people are out and about :D.

it WAS a cool place. Doesn't exist any more, and hasn't in a while. vegetation took over. There are several around however; most of them on private land. If you are interested PM me. I know quite a few in the area and could help get permission if need be.

Re: Grass strips in the Texas Hill Country?

Biggin Hill out at Shallowater, Texas just east of Lubbock is a private fly-in community. I had an uncle and some cousins that lived there for many years. There is not much close-by to see or do. They are pretty friendly if you land there. I am not sure who the person to contact before landing out there is anymore, but I would think that Van White or his wife Sandra (telephone: 806 873 3530) would be able to help if a person just absolutely felt that landing there was something that they wanted to do. Again, I think if you landed there you would quickly realize that it is basically just a residential type of place with not much going on anymore due to the aging of its population! I hope this helps.

HAHA! I'm glad you like that avatar!! I think it's a couple of boys that got their 152 tangled up in a hi-line and are now attempting to avoid electrocution as they disembark the craft! Anywho, just something I found online and thought was funny! Anybody doing any backcountry flying throughout the lonestar state? I'm sure interested in trying to get into a little. My bonanza isn't the ideal bush plane, but can handle any strip in reasonable condition as long as it is 1500-2000 ft long!
