Talk about the ultimate off airport landing! I like what one engineer said, when asked if he was nervous " people watching this at home have as much control as we do, it' s all up to the programing now." I sure would like to see another moonwalk, American hopefully.

Because I'm getting tired of financing someones science project!
NASA. needs a PR program.
Someone needs to explain the "Value" of this huge expense!
But that's just me.
Can Mars support a freeking mico-organism? Who gives a shit!
If it could, what the hell could we do about it... Keeping in mind, we are f&@;^*#, Broke!

Re: Mars Rover Curiosity-Landing 8-5-12

The GPS systems we use sure are nice and so are the computers we are using. Without launching satellites and the reach we made into space most of the advances we have made in technology would be limited to those developed for war time. It is still cheaper to lead and push the envelope of discovery with exploration than it is to ride shotgun to the Russians or Chinese and resign this country to second place. The drivers seat will always come with the price of responsibility.

Re: Mars Rover Curiosity-Landing 8-5-12

If it wasn't for human's built-in curiosity and drive to learn, explore, and discover we'd still be living in caves and flinging poo at each other. Though, as we breed ourselves stupid as a species, we may be doing it again.

I suspect that no explanation would suffice. The benefits from the space program over the decades would take hundreds of pages to list. From electronics to weather prediction, medicines to pathophysiology. Advances in ceramics and metallurgy as well as aircraft construction and design. Solar power, and particle beam transmissions will help power us as fossil fuels dwindle. All directly related to NASA spending. Someday, in the not too distant future we will have to find a way to expand beyond this planet. We are laying the groundwork for that.
The government is rife with wasteful spending. My personal favorite is the National Endowment for the Arts. Take your pick from tens of thousands of redundant environmental studies. How about free healthcare for life for politicians? Where's the balance sheet there?
In the grand scheme of things, NASA and the space program is one of very few programs with tangible benefits for everyone.
"Keeping in mind, we are f&@;^*#, Broke". Not from NASA but from out of control entitlement spending.
