My RR came with a Totax 503, which has worked flawlessly, without a single hiccup to this day and I have a low time, spare 503 sitting in a box for parts or replacement, whichever comes first. But I agree the HKS is a good choice. If I was to go 4 stroke, I would probably go with HKS, though the turbo model is a bit pricey.

UPDATE

It's been a long, difficult road at times, but Stace called a few days ago to inform me that the new plane (less the engine) would be finished by March 9! Great! Now I just need to choose an engine and prop combination.

Great news! It sure looked good in the shop while he was getting it together. How are you getting it over there?

When the time comes to ship it over to the Philippines, it will be in a container with wings and tail feathers removed.

As a word of advice, to truck it to the container and the container to the ship, have them specify air ride trailers and shunts only. Usually it costs no more and gives less bouncing around. This is something Dream Aircraft is doing in addition to overseeing packing/crating.

I think you did just fine with what you got though. How's the transition training coming?

Re: New Ridge Runner project

Well I've got to tell you, I have a new found appreciation for all you long time tailwheel pilots. I have well over 1000hours in training wheel aircraft and I thought the transition would be fairly benign. I'm getting the hang of it but I still wouldn't want to tackle any more than a 10mph cross wind.
The Rans S-7 was a good choice and I can't wait for Caveman to show her off.

Re: New Ridge Runner project

Nope. He says in a text a long time ago that the plane is done and just waiting for an engine but he won't send me pix. I'm in a foreign country, can't exactly visit there to see what's really going on. I'm not going to buy any engine or invest any more money into it until I get pix and a receipt complete with frame serial number.

Re: New Ridge Runner project

This is a common story in the experimental aircraft kit world. The owners have had a very difficult time with health these last couple of years and like many of these little companies they operate at an insufficient "cash on hand" margin to make a go of it in case of a medical or economic problem.
I'm very sorry to hear of this. Let's hope that all ends well.

I know you are a prayer. I'll help you with that.

There is a couple BCP guys that live over by Nampa, maybe one of them can drop by and take a bunch of pics for you. I'd be happy to do that for you the next time I head over to that side of the state.

Whee that would be great. Pass the word along to whoever you have in mind. It would be great to actually see what is going on with the new build project.

Re: New Ridge Runner project

I really feel badly for you WingsOver. You have been through a lot of grief and have been very patient. Unfortunately the manufacturer had a complete collapse of fortune. I feel badly for them too. No way they would have chosen this outcome.

Prayers for you and God speed in all your adventures

I'm very sorry to hear of your problems, though I'm not surprised. This is not the first I've heard of problems with RR.

Well, things just got more complicated. I have received hostile texts telling me to come get my plane (and calling me names like "Jew with a job". That alone should be a clue to others about how poor Rocky Mountain Wings customer service is, even calling customers derogatory, anti-Semitic names....What a disgrace.

Through a friend, I made contact with someone with a trailer in Nampa who is willing to go pick up the plane. When he called Rocky Mountain Wings to confirm a time to stop by to pick it up, he got a long winded shpeel about why it cannot be picked up,

When it was discovered I was putting the project up for sale, I received texts indicating that Rocky Mountain Wings was desperate to sell the plane for me. When I refused to authorize Rocky Mountain Wings to be a selling agent, I was told that "we're not finished yet" and "there is more paperwork for me to fill out" (which is a lie). When I requested scanned images of the alleged paperwork emailed to me, the story changed again. Rocky Mountain Wings then alleged that there are so many appointments ahead, there just isn't time to release the plane to me or anyone.

Now, I was just recently informed that Rocky Mountain Wings has hired a lawyer, put threatened to put a lien on the unfinished plane, will not release it to me or anyone until I pay 17 months of "storage" and additional alleged work on the plane, or unless I will sign some agreement (probably an agreement not to sue him), then allegedly the plane will be released from the lien and into my care or whomever I authorize to pick it up. This is dirty business.

Due to the situation, I am limited in what I can or should say about individuals involved, but I will say that my experience with Rocky Mountain Wings has been the worst possible (and getting worse) and I would discourage anyone and everyone from doing business with that company, or any company that treats its customers so poorly as Rocky Mountain Wings has treated me. I will let others come to their own conclusions.
