Actually there are only six things God hates, seven that are detestable to Him (Proverbs 6:16-19) and being a coward is not one of them. :| :D

But it would make for a cool show to film the makeover Allen! I love watching your show and these rebuild threads, combining the two would just be the bomb!

Project: Cessna 170B

Dammit that was my idea, somebody beat me to it again.
Working on your bird fixing it up, putting on an mod or two is a lot of fun. Seeing what somebody else is is doing gives you some ideas for next year.

Re: Project: Cessna 170B

I am definitely on the "light" side of this thread, but I am putting in Atllee Dodge seats and a new floor and flap tunnel cover.

Got one seat in yesterday, and all the carpet out. Ordered a flap tunnel cover from Selkirk and some flooring from Spruce. I originally wanted to go with the Aerofloor that Greg used, but with shipping and customs it was going to be over $400

Looking good. I wish I could be getting some work done but I'm stuck in Little Rock for another week.

Re: Project: Cessna 170B

Well, we decided to replace the pilot side door on our 170. The original door had been "repaired" with bondo sometime ago before we bought the plane, and is now starting to come apart around the lower rear seal area. And there are some other issues with it as well. So, we have a new, used, door and I will be stripping & painting it, and replacing the hinges with the hinges from our old door. I'll see if this cures my need to do what Rob has done, or makes me want to do more...

Re: Project: Cessna 170B

So...what would be a ballpark figure for having a 170's paint stripped by a paint shop?

Re: Project: Cessna 170B

More than the type of guy who owns a 170 would pay. Just enough to make him do it himself. Probably less than the effort to actually do it:)

I've been quoted $8500... After doing some stripping that seems like a very resonable figure  I'll have more money to spend on other things by doing it myself though!

If you want to go up, pull back on the controls. If you want to go down, pull back farther.

4 Grand seems pretty reasonable really. That looks like a lot of work....

Re: Project: Cessna 170B

Spent a few hours making a template for the new rubber mat. Surprisingly time consuming, but it should fit well. I can't decide if I should try and carry it over the edges of the seat rails, but thing it is more likely to lie flat if I stop it at the edge.

Re: Project: Cessna 170B

I think it's wise to cut it the way you did on the seat rail edges rather than over the top of them. Even some pretty thin material over those edges can make moving seats a pain in the butt.

Re: Project: Cessna 170B

Not in the same league with Rob, but I spent time today stripping the "new" door for the 170, it's almost finished, but dude, that's a lot of work for one piece. I really want to strip and paint the interior this spring, but I don't know if I have the time. I fly the plane for work a couple times a week, not sure I can have it down for too long. Anyway, the new window should be here soon. Now trying to decide what to do on the interior facing side. Paint it and stuff the holes with the Selkirk insulation (how do you get that stuff in there and make it stay in one place?) or put a light-weight minimalist panel over it?

Here is the interior side with stripper applied around the edges:

Re: Project: Cessna 170B

Here is the exterior of the door - still a little work to do, but getting pretty close. Also I can confirm that the window frame on this door is steel. I'll have to check on the frame from the door still on the plane to see if its aluminum. If so, I'll weigh both and see the difference.

You guys need to start your own threads in the project section and stop stealing Rob's thunder!

Re: Project: Cessna 170B

While you're at it, lose those stupid 170 door latches. One day, they will ruin your day....all it takes is a little wind, and the plane rocks on its gear, and boom, you've got a damaged door and possibly a damaged strut....that gets expensive, trust me.

The Cessna 150/152 door sprags work waaaaay better, and they fit well with the original 170 handles. I put a set on, and I'd do it again in a heartbeat.
