Light is right! :D I'll be mounting an iPad mini with foreflight (poor mans glass panel) in the center via an AirGizmos docking station.

Re: Project: Cessna 170B

Today I finished stripping the ailerons. Now all I have left is some miscellaneous fairings and some clean up work on the doors and tail feathers. I also installed a new tailwheel spring along with replacing a tailwheel bracket that was cracked.

This was a pain to install!

Now the angle of the dangle is just right

It all looks really good, I just can't wait to start putting the rest of it back together, and getting a little paint on it will be really nice

Re: Project: Cessna 170B

Rob,

Looks good. You probably already know that anyone can strip and paint (or polish) an airframe, but balanced control surfaces must be rebalanced and signed off by an A/P mechanic. I found mine to be pretty badly out of balance after having one re skinned.

I still recommend going to the L19 main leaf on the tailspring. The stock spring will sag with a load in the plane....

Re: Project: Cessna 170B

MTV is spot on... Your surfaces will for sure need to be rebalanced. Although the range is pretty forgiving, taking the paint off will dramatically change things. I painted my 180 w/ a base clear and that added a bunch of weight causing me to add lead. Make sure you check em and do it right. Flutter is nothing to play with.

Looks good Rob!

The others are really right. Get the surfaces rebalanced. Had a problem with my 170 after rebuild and they were really out of balance.

Re: Project: Cessna 170B

I've known about the requirement to rebalance control surfaces when painting them, or stripping them of paint in my case. I will have it done. Just curious how they actually rebalance them, what's the process?

Re: Project: Cessna 170B

Not that complicated actually... In a nutshell, you use a knife edge to hang the balance point on, then use a tool to measure the balance. Your Cessna manual will give the range of what is acceptable. The C170 is a pretty forgiving range, but its important to get it w/in limits to avoid flutter.

This is kind of a bad video, but it gives the general idea.

Re: Project: Cessna 170B

Today we test fit the new panel, it fits great but there's still a couple more holes to cut out. We also drilled out the seat rails and did a few other things to prepare for paint,

Re: Project: Cessna 170B

Today we got the Selkirk extended baggage installed. We also washed the airplane inside and out to get ready for paint. There's still a few hours of prepping to do but with any luck we might have the interior painted tomorrow.

Take a picture when you get a chance DP. I'd like to see it, especially after it's installed.
