Impressive. You work a job, have a wife and kid and are getting the plane done in record time!

Rob should we paint the leading edge of the horizontal red also and then put a clear tape over the top of it.

Not my decision to make, however from the flying exploits Rob posts here, I wouldn't consider anything less than a full-on rubber anti-abrasion boot for the horizontal leading edge. Applied well, it can look very good. Just my .02, kindly disregard if you like.

Re: Project: Cessna 170B

X2 on the rubber abrasion boot. The horizontal portion is pretty easy to install as it has just a slight curve. It's a little tricky to make the rubber curve on the elevator portion and required some creative trimming to make it look good. I installed it by myself and it would have been much easier to have a second set of hands. Bushwheels kick up lots of stuff and the tape that was on there before just didn't perform well enough.

akgreg I agree with you, that a rubber abrasion boot would be better. who did you get your rubber abrasion boot from

Re: Project: Cessna 170B

That paint scheme has always been my favorite for Cessnas...really classy without being too "busy".

X 3 on the rubber abrasion boot on the horizontal leading edge. First time you bounce a good size rock off it you'll be really glad you did. And, Bushwheels actually don't throw as much junk at your tail as do treaded tires.

Nice work.

You might try either Stoddard's or Reeve Airmotive in Anchorage. One of those places is likely to have some in stock. MEK to prep, and 3M #1300 contact cement to adhere. Mine are holding on well eight years later. I didn't do the elevator leading edges, just the horizontals, and have no regrets.
p.s. recommend against trying to do it in a swarm of mosquitoes. That was memorable!

I'll look into the abrasion boot. I think Greg got his from Yingling.

Hey Rob - I just went through this on my plane. I don't know if this will work for the 170, but the catch-all part number for the abrasion boot is: S1938-3-68.00 Has to be cut down to fit the 180. This seems to have replaced a lot of the previous p/ns from over the years. I ordered mine from airpowerinc.com. 3M 1300L glue from spruce/etc.

Paint came out great. I'm in the middle of similar project so I can understand the amount of work you've put in to it.
