Re: Out with the old in with the older. Straight tail 182.

Those engine parts look gorgeous! More pics as assembly progresses, please.
Is that an "L" engine?

Still plugging away at the slowest pace possible. Is is mostly an L engine.
I thought I was ready to assemble but of course you never have enough parts. With an 10 under crank u need a ten under oil transfer collar. The tolerance for this fit must be perfect. Too tight and they don't do well in cold temps too loose and you lose oil pressure.

Rods weighed, bushed and ready to go.

Skipping ahead fitting and measuring before final assembly.

Laying the string out is fun. Only one person to blame if it leaks.

Ready for cylinders.

Cylinders on. Starting to look like a real engine now.

Installing the oil pickup.

See what's wrong with this guy? I spent more time then I will admit wondering why it wouldn't thread on the stud no matter what angle.

Thank you for documenting this here. I've never seen this process in depth. Looking forward to seeing the final product come together with the engine and panel together.

What's that worm-drive gear on the forward end of the camshaft? Is that something to do with the governor?

I'm curious about the data plate on a Ponk'd engine-- does yours still have the "470 L" stamped on it, or is it over-stamped or replaced with a data plate that says "470-50"?

Re: Out with the old in with the older. Straight tail 182.

Well let's see. This engine was a new IO-520-F. It flew in a Yute air 206 for about 1800 hours. It was "converted" to a tsio-520-c to comply with the pponk stc then converted to a O-470-50. The data tag has a new data tag glued over the top of the original. It has a overhauled crank now out of a 520 L. They are all pretty much the same aside from some minor changes.

Got my mount back from Atlee dodge today. Here is what you see when ya walk in.
Image

All four pads got beef up doublers. The big tubes had some heat corrosion so they got an inner sleeve. The lower legs had corrosion and were entirely replaced. Powder coated grey. Looks great!

Re: Out with the old in with the older. Straight tail 182.

The engine build is don't except for a few minor items. Traded the slicks for a bendix kit waiting on that.
Image

I also found an overhauled c58 two blade for about five times less then a new three blade. 82" just like my old prop.

I'm excited to see the difference in performance. With the engine being the only real change it should be pretty telling. Hopefully I can get to installing it when I get back from the big island in a week. [emoji3]

Re: Out with the old in with the older. Straight tail 182.

That engine looks great. You don't by any chance have a left-over "timing indicator plate" p/n 628760, do you? It bolts to the starter drive housing and has a timing mark which you line up with a matching mark on the generator drive pulley. TCM came out with a service bulletin years ago that says to leave it off, my 1993 factory reman doesn't have it but IMHO one of those'd sure make it quicker & easier to time the mags.

I didn't have one but if I had I woulda installed it. They sure are great but then Dennis made this little tool. Super accurate, way faster then the timing dome I just love it. I don't use the little timing plate pulley mark anymore.

That does look slick. Have you used it? Does it actually line up on TDC when the engine's at TDC?

Re: Out with the old in with the older. Straight tail 182.

Getting closer. Engine on and new exhaust installed. C58 mounted. Sooo much to do still.

Image

Stripped the seats. That old horse hair cushion was stankey. Frames are at Anchorage custom powdercoat.
Image

If you have rubber firewall mounts like all the early Cessnas be careful. They wear out and cause the bolt to bang around on the frame. Any longer and this firewall bracket would need repair. Also causes lots of vibration.
Image

Old parts next to the much improved metal floatplane bushings.

My paint is of such high quality its self stripping.

OK... I hate to be the one to say this, but, a paint job isn't really that much considering all the other stuff you're doing...

Love the progress on this bird....

Paint is a huge detriment...makes your airplane look like the one to steal stuff out of...

I'm slowly collecting the push/pull switches for my C120 that didn't come with an electrical system. So if you decide not to use them.... :)

I don't mind the push pull switches, but I prefer rockers. I think they just make the panel look neater.
