I’ve got a .35 Whelen. Love it. “Almost” a .375 H&H but 5 rounds instead of 3. It’s my Sitka blacktail rifle during the time when the brown bears are still up and around. Emphatic killing power and next to no meat loss with the right bullet. Best adaptation of the timeless 30-06 cartridge going.

That's a beauty of a rifle. Mind sharing some specs on it?

Thanks. Working on rifles is my other bad habit. Keeps me sane in the Winter.

Nothing exotic, Remington 700 left hand action, McMillan stock I found on EBay and painted. Chambered the X-Caliber barrel a couple of years ago. Sent to a fellow in WA for Cerakote. It’s been dragged around a good bit and isn’t as purdy today. [emoji1]

Good stuff. A hunting rifle shouldn't stay purdy right? :-)

Re: Rifles

I've been culling the herd lately, intent to just have a few really nice rifles.

- .260 Rem ultralight rig for the mountains
- 6.5 PRC for pretty much anything, although it is a bit heavy for a mountain rifle at a bit over 8 lbs.
- .280 AI for elk and moose

We aren't allowed to hunt grizzly anymore so I sold my 9.3x62. I was regretting the decision even before I'd boxed it up to ship. I've always been interested in the .35 Whelen so that might be my next acquisition to fill that hole in my lineup.

I've been all over the map with optics but am absolutely loving the Leupold VX-5 that came on my .280AI. Great glass.

280AI = Ackley Improved?

I've always thought that a 338-06 (similar to Elmer Keith's 333 OKH) would be a logical cartridge,
but none of the arms or ammo outfits have ever adopted it.
With the popularity of the 338 Winchester, it seems like there'd be more bullet options than in 35 caliber.
The 338-308 was legitimized as the 338 Federal though.

Re: Rifles

Yeah, Ackley Improved. Very similar performance to my old 7mm mag but more efficient.

338-06 has always been of interest also. I don't feel the need to send those big bullets fast so the magnums don't appeal to me. My 286 grain Nosler Partition in my 9.3x62 was only plodding along at 2400fps.

Next time I won't make the mistake of buying a bigger caliber in a lighter rifle. I think high 8, low 9 lbs is right for me for anything bigger than the .280.

Re: Rifles

I've been thinking about getting the Savage Arms model 42 takedown. combo 410 shotgun and 22L rifle that break down into two pieces making for compactness.

That looks like a slick little gun to have for throwing in the pickup or plane!

I just order a Keltec CMR30 and will be picking it up tomorrow. I wanted something a little more powerful than a .22 LR. But also wanted something small and compact. It's very light and with the stock retracted, quite compact.

I like that Keltec CMR30 and I’ll put that on my wishlist.
Do you think it will stop a raging grizzly bear coming at you?

I pack a Rossi ranch hand in .44 mag in the plane, and it's actually turned into my preffered saddle gun as well. Nice to have it strapped to your leg instead of under the stirrup. Nice and compact and lots of punch.

Well, if the bear was already caught in a snare made from 1/2" cable, I recon it might...

Pretty sure that's not the intended purpose...much better for stopping raging tin cans mocking you from the top of a fence.

Re: Rifles

Anybody else fall into the Labradar and QuickLOAD rabbitholes of reloading?

It shouldn't be surprising that a hobby measured in thousandths of an inch would lend itself to scientific methods. These are two pretty cool tools for the nerdy reloader.

A buddy of mine owns the original handgun version and likes it.

No problem!! I'll just shot it the eye! If that doesn't work, I'll reach down his throat and turn him inside out.....that way he'll be going the other way! ;)

Seriously, I only want this for a plinker and small game gun. Normally (as in 99.9% of the time) I have something much bigger strapped to my side. Want it more for the ATV and tractor than anything else. Good for porcupines, coyotes, and other vermin that wanders my land. Also for Bobcat. Have seen a dozen in the last few weeks.

I snuck up on this guy a few weeks ago. I got 25 yards from him and snapped a bunch of pictures. He had made a 'nest' right on the edge of a grass slough in the thicker part of my property. Image

Bobcats will eat your porcupines...no sense in shooting something that works for you.

I wasn't aware that Bobcats eat porcupines. Interesting. We have a lot of Lynx around here and I have seen no sign that they dine on these spiny critters. Now the dogs, on the other hand, often go around sporting a full snout of quills.

The cats are smart enough to get a porcupine belly - up and go right for the noodles.

I have a Ranch hand also but found one of these a little more practical and yes, I think it will work better on a grizz than any handgun in 44 mag. if for no other reason than being able to shoot it more accurately. The takedown feature is as solid as a bank vault.

Re: Rifles

Everyone wants to stop a charging grizzly.

I'm more practical. I'm loading up some #12 shot loads for my sawed-off twelve gauge as wasp protection. They're what really scare me when I'm pushing through dense stands of stream-side willows.

Re: Rifles

The only time it is broke down is when it is in the plane (it can pack sideways in a 24" wide cabin) the rest of the time it is assembled and ready to rock. Considering I horse packed a Model 71 for many years I can't see how a 16" (12" in Canada) barreled 92 carbine could be any sort of hindrance on a horse but to each his own.
