Re: scouting big game by air... any tips?

I've got about 5000hrs at 200agl and the best advice I can give is don't do something that your not comfortable with. 200ft is about the best altitude to look, leave the binoculars at home and the observer. Buy a good digital camera with a decent zoom, when you find some good Bulls take tons of pictures, it's easier to study them on a computer than dive bombing them. Don't get behind of the terrain or the airplane because as a lot of people have already said, you can get so focused on an animal that you forget what your doing. As far as the legality of it, get 3in Numbers and don't do anything obvious like chasing Elk.. HaHa..

"With his road hunting permit, he and his buddies drive around in this motor-home looking for game. When they spot something there is at least 5 rifle barrels extending from the Winnebago."
Years ago we used the same system for duck hunting from my 47 Hudson Commodore 6. We used .22's not rifles. We did not know you could get a permit for that kind of hunting.

Super-Maule,
Awesome pictures!!! In regards to the handi-cap permit, while I could most likely get one I am still a 'hunter' at heart and as long as I can still get around a bit I will do it the old fashioned way...on foot. Shot enough game over the years that the hunt it self is satisfying in and of itself. I have more bad days now then a few years ago but if I pace myself I am able to get off the road and hunt like a person is supposed to.

Speaking of dumb luck, I went for a short stll hunt during deer season. I probably covered a little over 1/2 mile and had to head home. As I was slowly walking home I came upon some fairly fresh tracks. Since it had just started snowing I knew they were quite fresh due to only a small amount of snow in them. I followed them a short ways and realized the deer was headed a direction that would bring it to cross my landing strip. Sure enough, I was about 100 yards from my hangar and he steped out of the woods edge, hot after a doe. One shot from my 7mm08 dropped him in his tracks. he was a 4x4 but had a broken off browtine. Weight was 206 lbs. It was a 140 yard shot and it was nearly straight out my hangar door. Couldn't ask for anything easier, especially since I had convince my self that I was done hunting for the season.

This is a very interesting cartridge that I only just learned about recently. It's maybe not the most logical choice for a Nevada mule deer hunt but then again it's not out of the question either. It's got a lot going for it in the accuracy department.

Good bullet, good load. That's exactly what I load for my 7mm mag.

I too use a 7mm-08 and have taken two moose with it now as well as several deer and Coyotes. Mine is a TC Encore pistol and is sooo much easier to pack around than a rifle, it also has no recoil to my shoulder at all.

If I can figure out how I will post a pic of the last moose soon.

Re: scouting big game by air... any tips?

In Oregon you can fly your plane, land and hunt right away as long as you land at an "established airport adequate for fixed wing aircraft". No further definition is given. Backcountry strip fit the descricption!

http://www.dfw.state.or.us/resources/hunting/big_game/regulations/docs/2014_big_game_regs_001-030.pdf

Hunt within eight hours of communicating with or receiving information on the location of game mammals from an aircraft. For the purpose of this rule “aircraft” includes unmanned aircraft such as drones.
■ Hunt within 8 hours after having been transported by helicopter or fixed-wing aircraft to any point other than an estab- lished airport adequate for fixed-wing aircraft.

Re: scouting big game by air... any tips?

Just don't get caught, like these guys. http://www.idahostatejournal.com/news/s ... 40d91.html

What bothers me about this article, is it starts with a report of a low flying aircraft (well a parachute anyway). What, something wrong with that?? That illegal now?? Bull! I'll bet there's more to this story, hopefully just the low flying report didn't start a search for the guilty party, hopefully the reportee had reason to feel they were spotting game. I don't give a shit about hunting, but I sure as hell like to fly low and do so a lot, and I would be pissed off big time if someone turned me in to the F & G thinking I was spotting game. This is always a big concern come hunting season on the mountain ridge I live on, it get's full of yahoo's from town out for their big buck, and meanwhile I continue to do my usual local flying, much of it low, and it has crossed my mind some may look up and think I'm spotting and get upset by it. As a result I have very grudgingly somewhat modified my flight profile during the season, luckily that fluorescent orange shows up pretty well, and if I see it I avoid it.

Re: scouting big game by air... any tips?

Just a heads up from experience.
Background, I fly a helicopter for a state wildlife agency doing wildlife surveys 2-300 hundred hours a year. We also used to fly hunters from fixed wing, scouting animals.
Gave it up after being investigated regarding airborne hunting act by said state agency and the feds for a complaint from a hunter.
The definition of harass in the act was explained to me by the feds as " if you fly by and an animal looks up and takes a step away or gets up out of a bedded position then you have harassed that animal". My take was I couldn't fly in my home state and not violate that law. It was just a matter if they wanted to pursue me on the charge. So I quite flying hunters. I do still fly cowboys looking for lost livestock, SAR, AG and the state folks where I harass the hell out of animals. But after the 6 hour "interview" I decided it wasn't worth it to scout game...
Also would suggest looking into the fines and penalties associated with a conviction under the airborne hunting act. I seem to recall aircraft forfeiture, 500K, and 10 years. It's apparently a big feather in a feds hat to have one of these convictions on their belt before they retire from a fed job.
I also receive 3 or 4 calls a year from biologists and DWM's asking if I know who might own such and such color airplane or helicopter that was seen chasing wildlife.
2 cents and all that.

We were excited to heli in Silverton — until we saw the bird. Looking like something your stoner uncle built in the garage out of four Meccano sets, a fish tank, and an AMC Pacer, this helicopter seats a pilot plus two only, making it a tricky vehicle, logistics-wise, when your group has 8 people in it.
