Re: Short Field Takeoff

Hey Rich, most of the comments from the AOPA forum are ridiculous. You shouldn't worry about removing videos because other people don't approve. If that was the case then there would be no videos on BCP!!! BCP is a community that constantly works to improve our own skills through others. I've been on this site for awhile and very rarely will I see someone negatively criticize another for asking advice on improving their skillset. I hope you post more videos and seek advice from others. I know that I have done the same in my old Cherokee 140. No one criticized me for flying an underpowered overweight airplane. They offered advice on how to make an improved landing and takeoff. I appreciate you sharing your experience with us and I'm sorry that the AOPA forum caused you to remove your video.

Re: Short Field Takeoff

They counter Rich's video with this. An exact opposite of a pilot who has absolutely no clue how to fly his airplane, and needs to be taught.

This is Mears Field in Washington. 267 MSL, with 2,600 feet paved. In a turbo'd Bonanza. He's pushing the envelope.

Re: Short Field Takeoff

midlifeflyer's post was my favorite over at the AOPA forum which ended with "...And one must always be cautious about not scaring the children."

Cracked me up and pretty much says it all. And let that be a lesson to you richpenny - quit hanging out with pavement pounders. :D

Re: Short Field Takeoff

That AOPA thread is some funny shit. Different paradigm I guess, but it seems like it's only a few of them, and many others were supportive. Every forum has its judges. 8) #-o

You should be able to read, just not post, at the AOPA forum, without joining.

Re: Short Field Takeoff

I have been into Mears aka Concrete a lot, normally land on the grass strip to the North of the runway; however, when I can see the bottom of the leaves of the trees and see them waving in the wind like you see in this video, Eastbound departure is wise.

Concrete sits at the bottom of the Skagit river valley and there is a serious venturi effect.....sound familiar folks?

My Maule would probably not have had that much of an issue, after all as mentioned the field altitude is all of 267 feet. Even with the heat the DA probably was not much above what field elevation would be in the Idaho or Utah back country; however, if I am getting a 25mph takeoff speed gift from the wind if I go East with no obstructions would I not be a fool not to take advantage of it?

I have never flown a Bonanza but watching them depart my home airport tells me they don't "jump" into the air. They are fast once up there. Knowing that why take off downwind?

Last summer the winds were 26 mph right down the runway at the end of the annual fly-in with everyone departing into the wind and some "experienced" SeeBee pilot landed straight in downwind into traffic. More "questionable" decisions.

Be safe out there.

I hadn't noticed the leaves. Good point. A downwind take off, while certainly doable under proper conditions, isn't a good idea on a relatively short strip. Even the lower powered Bonanzas would have no problem in a no wind or headwind situation on that strip--contrary to the way some folks fly them, they're not really fighter plane wannabees, no more than a Mooney is. They're very capable airplanes, flown properly.

I get the same EA. Can't read them if I'm not a member. I'd really like to read the comments, even though I'm pretty sure they'd be making my blood boil.

Re: Short Field Takeoff

I thought about posting on AOPA's forum a link to this thread on BCP, so they could see how people who fly in that environment react so differently. On second thought....they should stay over there!

Don't.... [-X

We have enough old pros and, like Zane says, judges, on here already. I know I'm more than guilty of this BS attitude and being a pompus windbag. But I like ours better.

Re: Short Field Takeoff

Concrete is a longer than normal runway and should be no problem fo 99% of Ga airplanes. The pilot had to be relatively new . After watching that video I am really wondering if the plane was running on all 6 cylinders. The only time it is iffy is when the east wind blows over 25.

Re: Short Field Takeoff

The AOPA boards are a special kind of entertaining. There are some really good folks over there, but mostly airline pilot mentalities. And I know there are airline guys here, but the folks here are also interested in backcountry flying, which is very much not the flavor over there.

You guys are a bunch of internet trolls. Hilarious. :D

Someone should see if they can stir things up again... comment on his lack of radio calls or something.
