Heck 600's would work in the right conditions. The one yesterday would be great for 600's. Every lake is different. You just need to go out and see for yourself. Dig a hole and check thickness as well. If you dont have at least 10-12" of ice, dont even bother. Of course there is a lot more that goes into it, shoreline, aspect, creeks running into the lake, pressure ridges, no brakes, etc. And thats just a little bit of the big picture. Bottom-line, landing on ice is a very cool experience but not worth watching your plane go for a bath and then dealing with bigger problems.
I think one of my personal favorite things on the ice is listening to the water underneath. It sounds like whales are below. Imagine that sound and add some good popping and cracking. It will make the hair on the back of your neck stand up.
