What's the latest intel on light weight starter suitable for a Conti 0-300, looking for the pros/cons of replacing the original boat anchor I have on my motor

I'd be going B&C, in fact I've pretty much completely outfitted my experimental Lycoming with their stuff.

Half a century spent proving “it is better to be thought a fool than to open your mouth and remove all doubt.”
B&C without question. Unless you have a D model O300, then your out of luck.

Which is what I have in my 170A, so I got a skytech, it's okay.... spins the prop plenty fast and starts so.... does the job.

Thanks gang, looks like my "diet plan" will now include a B & C starter and matching alternator.

Unless you don't need the vacuum pump. Pretty sure you can remove the right angle adaptor and put a straight starter on.

Unfortunately that’s not the case. The crankshaft cluster gear is different.

Learned something knew today. I was told the changes were external.
On the subject of Starters, what are you putting on your IO-360? Mine arrives Monday and it still has the stock boat anchor on it along with the stock alternator which is the wrong voltage for my application so - I'm looking for new ones.

I tried to put a B&C starter on my IO360. I’m sure you know the IO360 and O300D use the same cluster gear, starter adapter and starter motor. No one could tell me the actual differences that made the B&C starter not fit. I posted about the trial fit in the school me IO360 thread.
I’m just using the original heavy starter. I’ll probably switch to a Skytech when I can. Niagara told me the IO360 doesn’t suffer the same adapter troubles as big continentals because the gear ratio is different and that a skytech will work good.
Worth noting; the B&C lightweight alternator will fit the IO360. That’s what I wanted to use but for various reasons I used a Plane Power.
