Supercub On It's Back @ Lower-Loon

Hello Backcountry Pilots,

FYI, I have it from a reliable source that there was a supercub on it's back at the Lower-Loon Airstrip this weekend. No injuries, just bent metal. Are you seeing a trend?

Yup. Add to that the 2 fatal crashes in Florida this week and the fatal crash of a Nigerian airliner. I'm seeing a trend. OMG... sometimes pilots make mistakes. Who knew? How many car crashes in ID the same day?
Oh God... the humanity!!!

S-12,

I will add you to the 10% list, and just consider the source. Sure hope we don't loose access to the Lower-Loon Airstrip. That place is awsome.

The travesty is loosing access to the Lower-Loon Airstrip. If it were a fatal accident, the F & G would shut it down for sure (lawyers). If you don't police yourselves, someone will do it for you. Not a good thing.

Re: Supercub On It's Back @ Lower-Loon

I have no interest in the back and forth you guys have going, but will add this.

I was at the fly in all week end and although not perfect, it was a nice event. Being good users of the backcountry is and was on everyones mind. All there felt terrible about the white house thing, although that could have been much much worse.

I was at Lower Loon and can tell you from first hand that it was minor and ready to fly out in a matter of a few hours.

Personally I am grateful that we are free to enjoy the Idaho Backcountry. I am also grateful that others can come and enjoy it as well. Not all of these people are perfect, I know that I'm not, and I'd dare bet neither are you. IMHO, no use, which means no money, is more poisonous.

Darn... another list.
How about a few of the other lists I'm on.
Military veteran
ACTIVE member of 7 different pro-access organizations
ACTIVE member of local S&R
Active member of multiple OHV work/maint. groups
Active BCP.

You seem like the 90% that see fit to whine and complain but do little to help except to tell the rest of us how to act.
Again I will ask. Where was your righteous indignation during the Caveman fly-in? Plenty of motocross strip bagging then. How many did you bag?

I'm proud to be one of the 10%ers.
Consider THAT source.

Ther are two kinds of 182 pilots. Those that have not bent a firewall and those that will. Made some stupid landings but have not bent mine yet. Sence puting in the grass strip at my place I have honed my skills from blunt to dull.

Re: Supercub On It's Back @ Lower-Loon

I think SM has a valid point. The backcountry strips will only support so many landings per day. I do not pretend to know how many that is. I think that it will handle what it did a few years ago. We will all agree that if you had 100,000 planes that wanted to go to JC at the same time that would be too many. So somplace between two years ago and the 100,000 is where the breaking point is.

If I fly in, camp for two nights then leave, I have a footprint factor of one. If on my full day there I were to spend that morning flying into six other strips then I would leave a footprint factor of seven. Just a thought, but then I couldn't get a cool tee shirt with a forged BCP logo on it.

But then on the other hand, if I cannot fly into Lower Loon, why would I want to keep it open?

The Grand Canyon river float trips used to be open to all. After it got discovered and more folks had extra income to spend it got so used that they enacted a lottery system (I think). They do now have a lottery system to get into Burning Man now cus of crowding, not that anybody on this site cares.

Re: Supercub On It's Back @ Lower-Loon

holy cripes, its turning into backcountrypissies around here. WTF good is a BC strip if you dont use it. If you dont want to leave a foot print in the BC then why the hell would you bother to hang out on this site? I have been seriously wanting to fly down for the JC flyin in the next couple of years, but now I think I will just stay up here and play in my own back yard with the bears.

Last I heard this strip is private. I was there on Saturday. The owners were very helpful to the Cub and assisted with their tractor to turn back side up. I was also told they offer breakfast and wouldn't mind more visitors. This is a technical strip so make sure you are up to it.

"Honed my skills from blunt to dull"-- an instant classic. One of my favorite expressions is that I strive for perfection but am usually lucky to achieve mediocrity.

Here's a deep thought, are you ready?
The lightest footprint is the one not left.
I have told people something simlar in the past, when they were griping about too many people hiking etc in "their" mountains--"if you stay home, that'll be one less".
