Here's a decent one. The extendable hose is good at getting at tight valve stems.

I carry a similar one for my folding mountain bike, and hope I never have to use it for pumping up the 26" Airstreaks! It'd be better then nothing for sure, but it'd take a while. It is nice and light however and includes a pressure gauge.

Here's the stuff I usually have on me. Note that the neck-knife's sheath and the compass both have built-in whistles. Also note that almost everything can be used with only one hand. I also make it a point to wear appropriate clothing made of cotton, wool, or Nomex.

Don't know if it's been mentioned but a Snake Bite Kit might be good to have.

Re: Survival Gear

One addition I didnt see here which I would HIGHLY recommend it quickclot, bleeding to death sucks

Basically you apply it to a severe external laceration and it will cause clotting, the military has used it for quite some time, it does burn though, but hey, better then the alternative right!

As well as

Space blankets
Good fixed blade knife
Leatherman
compass / gps
mres
water tablets
Fire starter
406 GPS EPIRB
12g shotgun (buck/bird/flairs)
You can get floating soft rifle cases that you can put everything in just as long as it's under 10lbs it will even float.

And the rest depends on your local

As a Boy Scout all my life I have always had a little orange snake bite kit box. Now I am reading that it is one of the things you should never do if bite! Apparantly, the current reasoning is that slitting open a bite will cause more problems than the very little venom you might be able to remove. Now they want you to lay quitely and keep the leg raised.

Dang! There goes all that Boy Scout training!

Just be sure to get the sponge or gauze, the powder can be hard to apply, that's why I posted the link to the trauma kit from LApolicegear.

Here is a good write up on wikipedia

Skystrider, your right. It says the suction cups help within the first 3 minutes but you don't cut anymore. Good to know. Thanks

Re: Survival Gear

As far as sleeping bags go, Aircraft Spruce is now carrying Snugpak. These bags are made in Great Britain and are being used by our SF as well as the British and Austrailian Armies. They also make a great line of tents that pack as small as their bags. The bags are very high performance and pack small. I used one in Afghanistan while on a little vacation there. Kept me from freezin my arse off on several occasions. I just ordered one of their tents to keep in the Skywagon.

Re: Survival Gear

Wiggy's are awesome, and American and local to us here in Colorado.

I know the post about quick clot was a while ago, here's some more info. The powders have shown only to be effective with large blast injuries, and have a nasty byproduct of some heat, and sending clots into the vascular system. I've worked with medics in all the military branches and most have gone back to well aimed direct pressure, stuffing gauze into puncture wounds and use of tourniquets for evacuation.

The clot enhancing powders and gauze are expensive, and have no science to back them up, and no-one is speaking about their effectiveness for combat first aid, and many think they do harm. So... I'd spend your money elsewhere.

Thanks Rob. This has become a long thread. I think you're the only that really answered the question in the 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 format as requested. Good Job!

I'm curious why you would consider your 45 more important than a sleeping bag or tent in a (presumably) wilderness survival situation. I'm a gun guy too, but I consider having a gun on me more important on a trip to town than in the case of a forced landing survival situation -- unless that forced landing was in the middle of Tacoma or somewhere similar :P
Unless you're in cannibal or headhunter country, I would think that an accurate 22 would be a better choice than a 45 to shoot chipmunks or whatever for camp meat.
