I'm curious why you would consider your 45 more important than a sleeping bag or tent in a (presumably) wilderness survival situation. I'm a gun guy too, but I consider having a gun on me more important on a trip to town than in the case of a forced landing survival situation -- unless that forced landing was in the middle of Tacoma or somewhere similar :P
Unless you're in cannibal or headhunter country, I would think that an accurate 22 would be a better choice than a 45 to shoot chipmunks or whatever for camp meat.

Have you met Rob in person??

Re: Survival Gear

If you fly a lot in the boonies, sooner or later you're going to:
a) break down
b) get stuck
c) going to sit there for a day or two waiting for parts/help/ride out

It's a whole lot better to have tried on all your gear and thinned out the useless stuff beforehand and in controlled circumstances, than it is to find out the hard way. Go fly out to someplace unattended, park, and set up camp, preferably on a shitty day, and live off that gear for a day or two. It won't take long to see what the shortcomings are.

And did I mention a good, and thick, book? Boredom makes you stupid and take risks, and boredom is going to be a huge issue after you get over being pissed at yourself or the airplane. I'd much rather have my copy of Lonesome Dove than my .45 with me if I was waiting to get rescued.

I agree, if you want to be rescued up here, just find some game that is out of season and take a shot at it. Fish and game guys will jump out from behind every bush, no matter where you are and provide a nice warm ride to town.

The caliber of weapon should depend on the area you are flying over. If you are in an area known to be inhabited by bears weighting damn near what you aircraft does (or exceeding it in my case) You may re-think the choise for a survival weapon.

Alex didn't specify hot or cold climate. Most of my flying is in temps you will survive with out a tent. I guess my 45/70 would be better but it don't fit in my vest. If I have to end my life cuz PLB and Sat phone didn't work I don't want no stinking 22.

Good day

That's exactly why my "survival gun" is a .22. I can carry 200 rounds in one pocket. I'll be eating squirrels, tweety birds, and bunny rabits long after the big gun guys are out of ammo. With 15 in the clip, I could put a lot of sore spots on what ever tried to eat me, too.

Re: Survival Gear

After spending a long cold night in freezing rain due to a busted dirt bike 30 miles from my truck, I now carry a pretty good light weight kit wherever I go. I actually carried quite a bit of stuff before getting stranded, but the night I got stranded, I left my stuff a camp to pre-run trails for an ISDT event and I wanted my last run before dark to be fast and light. Big mistake.
I have a pretty good idea of the stuff I want in my Champ when I start to explore the strips around here. I am not that concerned about food. An energy bar, some hard candy, some nuts should do. Mostly to keep my mind off being hungry, but for the weather and distance I am limited to in the Champ, I do not think I would be stranded for more than 24 hours. There is also a lot of water in these parts, so a filter or some purification tabs make more sense than carrying a ton of it.

With that said, if I felt the need to have a true survival gun, which I don't, but still carry one because I like guns, I have had my eye one one of these:
http://www.baikalcanada.com/rifles_combo_94.htm

It has all the bases covered. 12 Gauge, .223, and .22 LR or Mag with a reducer. No bear, deer, squirrel, or bird will ever be a threat.
But seriously, here is what I have in my pack:

Space blanket mummy bag
Space blanket (each the size of a pack of smokes, maybe even smaller)
Air splint, medical tape, some military clotting gauze stuff that supposed to stop severe bleeding, band aids, betadine wipes, insect sting wipes, and a small snake bite kit. All this packs in a pretty small pocket. I also threw in 6 oxycodones just in case.
Leathermans, and a few other basic tools
5" non folding knife with a saw blade on the back.
A pack of Tuna, I figure it is high energy, and I won't eat in plane if I am a little hungry when I am out in the woods (may rethink this as I just moved to bear country)
20 or 30 rounds of .22 (I usually have my Walther P22 with me, but sometimes play around and use up the two clips I have for it)
Fire starter kit with magnesium, flint, striker, waterproof matches in one of those little containers, dryer lint with lamp oil in another little container.
Various cough drops, hard candy, and some aspirin.

Re: Survival Gear

I got my new air force surplus insulated flight suit the other day. 30 bucks from "Sportsmans Guide", an incredibly good price. They are brand new, and real high quality, with heavy brass zippers and lots of pockets everywhere. They are made out of that Nomex type fabric that is fire resistant, like a good flight suit should be I'm told, though I've flown for years with the flight suits made by Carhart. They even have a velcroed name patch, left blank so you can magic marker your own name on, or any name, I chose "Fred". Just to confuse people.

Two of the many pockets it has I really like. One small one on the left shoulder is just exactly right for my PLB. The other is on one of the legs and must have been for a knife or other skinny object, I found it to be just right for a highway flare, which is my choice of firestarter. So, at least I have fire and signal capability right on me at all times. For 30 bucks these things are hard to beat, plus you look like a pilot when wearing it.

Show us where to find this -I've checked there web site for this and no joy.

As far as Survival Gear I make up my own including 30 Cal . M1 Carbine with 300 rounds(some 30 or so tracers) & 20 Gauge breakdown with 40-50 rounds half slug other hunting. Sleeping bag, shelter ,SPOT, and enough to eat and drink for a week.Carried in Plastic "kitty litter" pales for water proof and good for water or whatever. I carry this all (approx. 50-60 lbs) in my extended baggage compartment all the time. Several backpacks with food, water in one and first aid in another ,tools and roll of safety wire, duct tape, shelter and signaling, fire starters and cooking on cans, several pound containers of penunt butter, soup and beans and whines ,1/'2 dozen or so MRE's, 200 ft. of parachute cord, communications bag with extra handheld and more batteries, hand held GPS and lots of double AA battery's , Extra clothes and jackets for the season . When I was in military I learned a lot about what you could DO WITHOUT and still survive- been there done that for real. 8)

If you want to go up, pull back on the controls. If you want to go down, pull back farther.

It may have been a "special", I found it on their website, but not on their catalog which I got with the shipment...... it'd be worth getting ahold of them to check. I'm 5'8" BTW re: the sizes available. Did they have bigger? Don't know, I believe so. This item was first brought to my attention HERE, by mountain matt if I recall correctly?

That is a great laundry list in emergency gear, as I was reading it, and before seeing the author and the avatar, I thought " Maule or 182", you guys have it good in the capacity/payload department! What I REALLY want is something with the capability to haul that amount of emergency gear "just in case", that burns less then 4 GPH and lands in less then 200' or less like my S-7, can't have it all I guess.

Re: Survival Gear

Sportsman's Guide is sold out of all of the USAF insulated nomex coveralls.

The British ones are still available in XL, but they don't appear to be insulated, plus they're $40 instead of $30.

I just picked up a small Red Cross radio off ebay. It has a hand crank so you can charge the battery. It has a flashlight, AM/FM/Weather and best of all a USB charger for Cell phones. There are quite a few there is anyone is interested.

Duct Tape, ax, saw. Some heavy rope is a must have as well. Tarps. They are light weight and you can make a tent or lento with them. Tent , good sleeping bag. Day pack. Flairs. Just a few things to the list. A good map.
