Re: Texas Hill country in a Stearman

Willie,

You've inspired me. Hadn't really thought of the Stearman as a backcountry plane, which is kinda silly of me considering they've been landing off-airport longer then anything else flown here. I'll pick up the gauntlet you've laid down, just as soon as there's a warm day again. ;-)

Hmmm, where to mount the camera.

BTW, when you post a video using the vimeo tag just put your movie id (118564751) between the vimeo tags, like this:
Code: Select all
[vimeo]118564751[/vimeo]

That way it will imbed in your post for computer users.

Thanks for posting.

Thanks Robert for the computer advise.

Yes a Stearman has been landed just about everywhere since it's inception, sometimes not willingly :)

Got to watch out for those Axis deer on the runway though .......

Just thought I'd add a little spice to the mix of planes seen here. It was a bit chilly at 52 degrees even for a guy with a North Texas accent :)

Very cool! Love the wind in your face!

Is there a prefered or recommended leather helmet for flying in the Stearman that you use or have used? I'm looking for one that needs to accomidate a headset and it will be in cold country. I've found several online but would like a recommendation.

Thanks and great video,

CW

Re: Texas Hill country in a Stearman

ours are from Gibson and Barnes. Leather. They will get alittle warm on a hot day in Texas. But 90% of the time they are great. When it's hot hot I carry and extra set of just headphones are go without...... it's a Stearman :)

Go to there web site and measure your noggin..... I carry 3 sizes also for my riders as well makes it easier.

Regarding headgear, I wear a helmet. In the rear seat of these tandem open cockpit WWll trainers there is not much head protection. If you end up flipping the plane the vertical stab is not much protection. A helmet can be obtained with noise cancelling and more comfort than a leather cap. Mike

Mike, which helmet/ANR combo are you running in the Stearman? Do you find that you get any sound leakage with glasses or sunglasses on with your setup?
