Ultimate PA-22 dream build...

Have you modified your aircraft? STC? STOL Kit? Major rebuild from just a data plate?

Maybe makes it less of a squirrelly bastard on the ground?

Former "Bushpacer" owner, joined the dark side and got a 182...

Re: Ultimate PA-22 dream build...

The Bushmaster is more stable than my Pacer was, I can fly it hands off for much longer periods of time. It is easier to land although, I miss the sporty feel of my Pacer. Like the Pacer it does run out of elevator. The PA 18 tail helps. I don't know what an 0360 or the 7" longer Maule engine mount would do. But, it should give it more downward pitch which I'm happy without. I like to land three point or be able to drag the tail in if needed.

Sure enjoying this thread - some very nice airplanes! Thought I’d add a couple pics of my Bushmaster. Left seaplane door - cub style gear - PA 18 tail - cuffed leading edge - micro vgs- continental 0-470 - 1501lbs empty 3000 lbs gross.

Wow, y'all really know how to make me feel broke! Love the slotted wings and Dakota options. Just wish I could do it with keeping it certified.

Although a lot of the pictures on this thread are of Experimental versions, it can be done via STC's and left certified... Stephen's red and white one posted here is a certified aircraft...

Ghan, did Savilles build that one? What kind of gear is that. My customers gear just failed at the point where that crossbar joins the front tubing. I've never seen a gear fail like that where it end up going forward.

Fortunately not much damage. Looks like new gear legs and prop and carry on.

Re: Ultimate PA-22 dream build...

Hi A1 skinner. I built my airplane- but the Savilles are close neighbours so were a great resource during the build.
The supercub style gear was incorporated to hopefully avoid a break like the one you are working on.
That looks like Ray Woodward’s old airplane - if so it was mostly built out here too
Cheers

Ya Edy had his hand in building this one. We picked it up in Aberdeen, Sk. Can't remember the owners name. I thought this was 3" extended piper gear, but I need to look it up in the logs. Very nice flying plane, and will continue to be here in a month or so.

Re: Ultimate PA-22 dream build...

Looks like Pacer gear - if you look at the gear on my plane you will see that the forward and rear attach points are much further apart than the pacer style - the thought is that it would take a much harder hit to damage the gear - also the hydrasorbs are out from under the seats allowing for much easier servicing and seasonal float changes.

Ya it's definitely -18 gear with the wide spread and the cabane V underneath. I agree that it's much better then the Pacer gear. If you look at my picture a bit closer you can see the bungees under there.

I imagine they can fail anywhere in the assembly depending on the quality of the welds and possible presence of hidden corrosion. The Trimmer 18 gear mod is the way to go, but there's a more reasonable intermediate solution.

We beefed up our Raven gear with a follow-on field approval initially authored by Eddie Trimmer and then Steve's Aircraft.

Thanks Zane. We already have a cabane V so we will check out the trimmer gear. We also plan on TK1 suspension now so we'll see how that goes.

Re: Ultimate PA-22 dream build...

Like Brian says, my Bushmaster is certified. The plane has many mods prior to the Bushmaster STC. I went with the BM STC after spending 5 years trying to get an STC approved to move my ailerons outboard and expand my flaps on a stock wing that had the old Ferguson STC which squared off the wing tips. In the end I'm happy to have switched to the BM it is much more Cub like and I only lost 3 to 4 mph in the cruise gaining 80 pounds. The GW is upped 100 lbs. the lower end speeds dropped about 10 mph and the plane is much more stable in cruise.

I have just switched my wing tips from Deemer to Sullivan (carbon fiber) but, haven't flown it yet. After I recover from my upcoming ADSB-out expense I think I might go to the PA18 gear. They are stronger, may save weight and clean up the bottom of the fuselage. No more air gaps, at least around the landing gear. Then maybe some panel changing, get rid of my steam gauges, then....

Bushmaster for $70k. Looks cool. Is that a big left side opening window or a small door??

Looks like a normal opening window with some glass put below it. Doesn't look like a door.

Sort of looks like a "patroller" window, not a full door
