WARNING: YOU ARE ABOUT TO WITNESS AN EGO BRUISING

Poor guy. The MJ approach with one white glove didn't help his odds.

Really do feel bad for him though, cool that he had the huevos to post on the interweb. Good for him!

Maule M-7 260 groundloop: Go to about 2:30 in video for short final.

Ouch. That does hurt. Is it windy? Looks like he was behind the plane, reacting instead of being proactive.

Re: WARNING: YOU ARE ABOUT TO WITNESS AN EGO BRUISING

Right crosswind? Thought he hit the only stump on the field, but then noticed right seat guy pulling mix control off. So, maybe a checkout or training flight with instructor? He is behind the aircraft, which is expected for a new guy, but he's probably paying the guy beside him to keep him from doing the dance through the runway lights.

Re: WARNING: YOU ARE ABOUT TO WITNESS AN EGO BRUISING

Been around for a while.
Looks like he was over-controlling it the whole way in, right up to the point he didn't have any.

Re: WARNING: YOU ARE ABOUT TO WITNESS AN EGO BRUISING

I had to come back and edit a little??
I watched this again and one thing stood out when I did!
It appears like the pilot is trying to drive the aircraft around with the ailerons?
He should have been making most of his heading corrections with the RUDDER, not the yoke!!
I think if he would learn how to do that, he would have no problems landing it as his feet would already know how to move!
A little forward elevator to get it on it's wheels, a little power to keep it there and keep the rudder alive and he would have had a great landing!

Lets vote for Dragging a Maule in and then 3 pointing it on the runway still going to fast!!
Then being so far behind to not use all the power he has for a go around or to catch up??
I agree, what happened to the guy in the right seat?? Who was flying?
Looks like maybe he should of had someone who knows how to fly a Maule.
Not just a Taildragger instructor!

Very poor directional control way behind the plane. The way that nose wondered I am not sure he knew what the rudders were for.

I'd say he's got a good attitude about it to share it himself on a forum and open up for critique.

If you've never flown a Maule, much less a taildragger, I'd reserve judgment until you do. Some obvious mistakes here, but these things have caused many a tricycle hero to walk away with the seat cushion partly eaten by his shorts. Most of us have taken an excursion into the weeds at some point.

Edit: Turns out the poster wasn't the pilot. He loses credit for the thick skin.

Re: WARNING: YOU ARE ABOUT TO WITNESS AN EGO BRUISING

Two rules I try to live by as a mediocre taildragger pilot:

1. Don't stop flying until it quits wiggling.

2. Good judgment comes from experience, and experience comes from poor judgment.

Two rules I try to live by when critiquing someone else's screwup:

1. Learn everything I can from the mistakes of others, while remembering that the next crash video up for discussion could very well be my own.

2. Karma is a bitch (see number 1 above).

I guess you could look at this different ways: embarrassing calamity, or inexpensive wake up call. I would wager that anyone who has some tailwheel time has had at least one Oh Sh$t! moment in a gusty crosswind.

Ain't that the truth!!

My typical experience is:

--this could still turn out ok, as long as things don't get any worse... :|

--ok, now they've gotten worse, but they're still not as bad as they could be... :?

--SHIT... :(

--SHIT<SHIT<SHIT...

--[stunned silence, glad you're still alive, but thinking to self:] I wish I could go back to not knowing things could get this bad. #-o

When it comes to airplanes and mistakes, you can make it through this entire progression in a very short amount of time.

Re: WARNING: YOU ARE ABOUT TO WITNESS AN EGO BRUISING

Good approach = good landing.

Neither in this case. He could of done a go-around and made a better approach. "Behind the airplane" flyng was evident for the beginning. Looks like a currency issue to me.

Re: WARNING: YOU ARE ABOUT TO WITNESS AN EGO BRUISING

Many thanks to the guy for allowing us to learn from his mistake. Many good comments here. Yes, he was using the ailerons rather than the rudder for longitudinal alignment. We need to rub our tummy (aileron for drift control) and pat our head (rudder for longitudinal alignment.) He was wagging his wings in a very coordinated way. And yes, Murphy's law applies. Only those with perfect attention to detail (proactive dynamic rudder control always/no lapse ever) have never at least tried to ground loop.

Re: WARNING: YOU ARE ABOUT TO WITNESS AN EGO BRUISING

It probably came straight from his golf bag. I gotta say, the right MJ glove actually feels kinda nice when handling the yoke. Just don't let anyone catch you...

Re: WARNING: YOU ARE ABOUT TO WITNESS AN EGO BRUISING

He is obviously not comfortable flying. He is never stable throughout the approach and the white glove is the obvious sweat collector...

And make sure the yoke consents before man handling like that....
