What's in your lunch box? Diet and Pilots?

Believing diet and exercise has a huge impact on my ability to operate, maintain and finance personal aviation...this morning I made Alaska Salmon and broccoli. Normally I just grab something at 7-11 when driving up to the North Shore to surf this November. This time, I made an effort to eat non processed foods. I feel a lot better about myself!

The useful load and handstand threads were another wake up call.

We're on day 21 of a whole30 challenge. Basically meat and vegetables. And my wife is an amazing cook. Today's lunch was leftovers from last night. Little burgers, ground beef patties, lettuce, avocado slices, bacon all between two baked sweet potato slices (worked like a bun) and brussel sprouts. Amazing!

I've switched to Diet Coke thanks to all the health-conscious threads on BCP. I hope to start seeing results soon! 8) :D

Today's lunch was a leftover paleo green curry. Dinner was grilled salmon with an avocado salsa topping, mixed veggies and asparagus!

Re: What's in your lunch box? Diet and Pilots?

Do you really really want to know? I've never tried a diet but someday I will. Maybe i'll try to cut sugar out or something. I don't drink pop cuz for some reason it seems disgusting. But i drink the heck out of coffee.

I go through 1 to 2 gallons of almond milk per week because my main staple is cereal (lactose gives me PMS). Sometimes I slap a dollop of peanut butter on it. I start the day and end it that way. I usually cram a handful of spinach in my mouth straight out of the bag before i leave the house. I got hooked on greens when I was farming them, plus I saw Breeden doing it the whole way to Alaska one time. I went through two packages of croissants this week smearing melted chocolate chips on them or slapping some chicken salad and greens and swiss cheese in them. One of my favorite foods of late is baby beets yanked out of the ground when they are dime sized. I just cook them in a little water with the leaves for ten minutes or so and eat the whole thing. It's awesome, but you have to grow them yourself to get them that size, and I'm too lazy, so i get them about once a year.

When i really want to splurge i go for mango flavored Choibani yogurt. Man, that was a great invention. I was getting tired of yogurt until those greek people went worldwide.

I try not to eat junk but i went to McDonald's yesterday. I've been hanging out a lot in town this year, so it's too easy. I go for the Sweet Chili Chicken Wrap. This seems like a stupid thread but I'm all about it suddenly. I think I'm assimilating. -Maybe gonna make parole next time round. [-o<

Pizza and eggs. Who doesn't eat that stuff? That's pilot food.

I only cook properly about once a week. But tonight's the night.
Salmon in some Masaman/coconut milk sauce with a clove of garlic, green beans, and onions and some olive oil. And a little arugula for color.

It might taste like shit. Not sure yet. I think it tastes better after it's cooled down.

Image

Oh yeah, and i loves me some chocolate cake. Especially if doused in ganache and raspberries. It usually makes my ass look fat, but it's worth it.

To try to tie this all back in with flying, i just take a bag or two of granola with me on trips. I am almost sick of it but it keeps the pooper flowing.

Cool Dudes!

Glad to read people are thinking about personal intake as much as purchasing an STC for MoGas! I mean, like myself, care of the aircraft may overshadow, forcing us to neglect "number one". Keep these kind of threads rolling, it reminds me to keep thinking about health.

Love the pictures you guys are posting! Yummy.

Today I ate a banana after some coffee this morning. Drove to Haleiwa. Surf breaking about 6'- 10' feet with a very odd Easterly swell mixed with a North ocean swell. The waves were great to surf. Made a spectacularly super hairy air drop on my 9'6" and made it. Beyond belief. Even the locals paddled over to see who I was. Surfers in the lineup started giving me some room like I was from Da Hui or something. I attribute my surfing performance to eating light and drinking plenty of water. It does work, at least in my own mind.

Carry on men. Good work!

Re: What's in your lunch box? Diet and Pilots?

I'm a meat and patatoes guy. Lots of meat, lots of patatoes and lots of pasta. My main diet works well with the recommended diet to eat while on chemo. They are big on eating lots of what I like, and lots of protein and carbs.
I also snack on chips and baking. The odd fruit in there. Maybe 1 or 2 cans of pop per week, but mostly drink juice or whole milk.
If I could figure out what to eat to help gain weight I'd eat some of that as well.
Interesting to read what you guys are eating.

BTW The worst food I like is Top Ramen. It tastes great but, it makes me gain weight in areas that are un becoming to a pilot. Bad for the heart too one study revealed. I feel like chucking the last few packages of Top Ramen in the trash.

I know you will get better soon. Thanks for the update.

I like beer, whiskey, and wine. That takes away the I won't eat that power. Now I have diabetes and am on a SI. So it is a never ending battle to keep off the needle and manage the disease with Metformin. My main diet consist of old fashion oatmeal with fruit or nuts for breakfast. Chicken or turkey with soup or veggies for lunch. Dinner is usually lean meat and veggies.

I try to avoid BLTs, burgers with fried egg, ham, bacon, cheese, french fries, tator tots, SUGAR!, deserts. I fail to often, but never quit trying.

Just had blood work and I am ok for a diabetic. A1C 6.9 cholesterol is 110 BP 110/78 I am 15lbs over weight. I walk a lot!! I am on the tread mill as I type this.

LOL! Same here!

I'm actually Vegetarian. Cow eats grass, I eat cow! :)

If you can, ditch the diet sodas and fried food!! When I get into a health kick, I lose a lot of weight just by not eating fried food and drinking diet sodas. Along with vigorous walking.

When I get in these health kicks once in a while, I eat mostly salads with Spinach, Arugula, tomato, cucumber, and Avocado.

Meat of choice is Grilled Chicken and pan fried Salmon. For the chicken, I really like Stubbs Chicken Marinade (usually $4-$6 at the grocery stores. But usually less than $3 at Wally World). I just use a good Salmon seasoning and pan fry in a little Olive oil.

Asparagus is one of the "Super Veggies" and I eat a lot of it. Just simply season with sea salt, pepper and pan fry in a little olive oil. Pan fry on Med-High heat just a few minutes while flipping the asparagus continuaslly until done. But don't overcook. You want the asparagus tender and retaining all them nutrients.

And like Swingle, I use Almond Milk for my cereal.

Now, If only I can practice what I just preached here every single day. I'd look and feel like a hot young stud again!! :)

Re: What's in your lunch box? Diet and Pilots?

You guys are really into this. There are some major players in the pilot/diet arena!

Got up @ 03:30 HST drank a large cup of Yuban coffe (but leaving the apartment I forgot my breakfast banana). Dropped my wife off at Ft. Shafter around 5:30 and headed to the country.

I had a #6 breakfast at the Haleiwa McDonalds on the North Shore. It consisted of two breakfast burritos, a slug of hash browns, and orange juice. Plus the McDonald's gives every customer free pineapple cups which were delicious.

As the Sun came up it revealed a calm ocean. This is November, it was 35' last week -- what is going on? Oh well it happens. Drove leisurely to Sunset Beach, Pipeline, and all the way over to Kaena Point. Nada.

For lunch it was mostly a can of Best Value WalMart chile and a Top Ramen. To make it go down a gulp of cold Coca cola. Not my best lunch.

Carry on men. Keep your diet in mind and march on!

Re: What's in your lunch box? Diet and Pilots?

Here's a fairly healthy and good product I found at Walmart.....

http://www.barilla.com/italianstyleentrees
Barilla Italian-Style Entrees (pasta and pasta sauce) No refrigeration needed and heat up in a microwave in 1 minute.

Actually, may be a good survival item to keep in the plane. Or have on board for when you get stuck at an airport with no food nearby but the FBO has a microwave.

I like the idea. The video says 350 calories, no preservatives. Interesting. Hope they have it in town, I'll pick some up.

Re: What's in your lunch box? Diet and Pilots?

One of our locals has a whole site called "The Paleo Pilot" http://thepaleopilot.com/. She also publishes "Aviation News Journal" magazine. http://aviationnewsjournal.com/ Normally I'd be scornful, but damn, does she look in good shape!

More and more pilot meetings I go are full of old farts complaining about their health, so a little healthier eating can keep the grim reaper a little further back in the rear view mirror.
