Where did you fly today?

Did you fly somewhere cool, take photos, and feel like telling the tale to make us drool from the confines of our offices? Post them up!

The ph# on AirNav is correct for Mahogany MTN, call ahead for permission. We could park for night beings we were staying at Cowboy Dinner Tree.

Re: Where did you fly today?

A quick run up to Heiner to finish a 182 checkout for the flying club and this students first landing off pavement. Always fun to see someone experience that. Then a quick stop in Afton to visit Mark Heiner. Always a pleasure! Sorry no pics. Great morning of flying!

Re: Where did you fly today?

On Saturday, I was hoping to fly to Mineral, Virginia for a Wings and Wheels gathering, but thunderstorms cancelled that plan. On Sunday, I flew down to Eagle's Nest (W13) in the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia where they run a glider operation all summer. The airport has a grass strip adjacent to the paved runway, but that got shut down earlier this year. Apparently, the grass strip was never formally approved as a landing strip and the FAA shut that part of the operation down. There is apparently some tension between the gliders and power flight training on the field. Since the glider club is now barred from using grass for any flight operations, they shut the runway down for the duration of a slow tow to a taxiway and then block the paved taxiway back to the departure end of the runway rather than using the ample grass off to the side. What a mess. It is busy little airport in a lovely setting with homes adjacent to the runway and 3 lots still available, so I hope this tension gets settled amicably,

Image

Although not a turf runway, I did find some grass to park in

Image

Glider operations are always fun to watch. The winds this day were gusty and came from all around the compass. The Pawnee towplane came dangerously close to a ground loop on one of its landings when it bounced and a side gust kicked it way out of alignment. A wingtip came frightfully close to hitting the ground before the wheels touched again. I would have gone to full power and gone around, but the pilot managed to salvage the landing somehow.

Image

On the way home, I stopped at Shenandoah Valley Regional, and there was a pristine DC3 dropping off passengers.

Image

Another Maule arrived just after the DC3 left - it turned out to be Michael Godfry in his MX7

Image

On the way back home I noticed this sign on the hillside - someday I'll have to stop and see how "endless" the caverns really are:

Image

Then back to the grass strip I'm based at. Cedar Meadows isn't on the charts but it has been a great place to base 52GK - I just wish it was closer to home.

Re: Where did you fly today?

Went to the Flying M for breakfast with Craig (groundlooper) and his friend Kelly. We hit a bunch of strips so that was fun, and those guys in their 172's have some serious balls!!!

went like this for me... KCVO->chehelam->flying m->willamette international->watt's landing->skyport->scappoose->tom's strip->cottonwood island->joe's strip->scappoose->KCVO

Edit: Forgot to put up a music disclaimer since I've gotten so many complaints in the past about my musical selections....
1. If you don't like it, mute it, and cue up what ever sweet track you wanna hear.
2. It's hard as hell to find songs now that are not under copyright on YouTube.
3. It's hard as hell to find a song that is 10 minutes long that is not a Phish song.
4. I'm only 27 so my ears work a little differently that some.

Great composite video Chosstronaut - I miss flying in the northwest. Perhaps I'll move back there one day...

Re: Where did you fly today?

This last weekend we flew up to Stanley, ID for a family reunion at Stanley Lake. The 2 hour flight sure beat the 6 hour drive! We had a great time despite getting sick, cutting my leg on a stump, and having our starter go TU on us in Jerome when we stopped for fuel. Luckily we got it hand propped and got it back to the barn.

And brains the size of peanuts!

Nice video. I hardly got my video uploaded to my computer. I watched your video several times as I was going into Tom's. It looks like I hit a tree on short final! After looking at my video, I clearly missed it.

It was really too warm to be going out of Joe's. I don't want to do that again. Interesting strip though, Get over the trees, drop down a bit into the hole but not so fast as to slam into the hill coming up, maybe add a bit of power but not too much because that runway end is coming up fast. Think quick, brakes or go around!

If one has a Savannah, it doesn't matter which direction to take off either!

Cool pictures Skalywag!

Somehow I ended up at the hangar, and then ended up in the air, and then ended up here. Only enough time to grab a quick shot before the storms rolled though.
