Good stuff Squash!

Debbie took me flying to see the rapidly changing colors around here, but I only had the iPhone along. (There's no room in a 150 for a camera and you have to shoot through plastic!)

Re: Where did you fly today?

Havre, Montana, a few weeks ago, a free breakfast for any pilot so that penciled out in my head to be cost effective! 12 hours of flying there and back, not direct by any means, lots of screwing around on the way, 3.2 GPH average mogas fuel burn once again so what the hell. I spent the night in Big Sandy (turns out it's not that big), splurging on a motel room a short bike ride from the strip. That night it really rock and rolled weather wise, so I felt like I got my money's worth, as my room didn't leak a drop and my gear was all dry the next morning.

There is nothing I like better then to decide I may need some car gas in another hour or three (I have well over an 8 hour duration, so usually have plenty of time, and I NEVER buy Av gas, not for 12 years now, not a drop) and then to start looking at my route ahead for the "right" kind of airstrip. This one, Dutton MT (maybe...) is about perfect, note the dirt strip at upper left, right next to town, like ALL airstrips should be. Image

This one, a different town, was even better. I landed to wait out a few squalls, and topped everything off while waiting them out.

There are a whole series of railroad trestles north of Lewistown MT., that I was alerted to about at the breakfast, by another sightseer type pilot, so I follwed the tracks and found them all, this being one of the best ones. I would have made for a better picture if a train was crossing, but no joy.Image

Then, for the second time this year, I had an "interesting" time getting through Raynolds Pass (spelling is correct, google earth it) though it is part of the Continental Divide, you wouldn't know it if not for the signs. About a mild a crossing as can be, right up there with Monida Pass, a big yawn usually. But this year it got my attention twice, first time making me land out and camp while it cleared. This time I was able to squeak through before it got too gnarly. Pic is from the Henry's Lake strip looking back at where I came from a few minutes before.
Image

From there it was across Island Park and then the big drop down into the valley floor, usually this means I'm home free, though I still have 80 miles to go. This day, I found 25 to 32 mph direct headwinds and that meant a landing back at my place, a one way up hill 400' long strip, would have those for a tailwind, no thanks. I landed Blackfoot, 20 minutes from home, and called it a day, got a ride, and came back the next day for the plane, I'm not proud.

Re: Where did you fly today?

That is where I keep all my bike related stuff, easily get atable during the day, as opposed to being mixed in with the other junk in my main baggage area, which is also a bit hard to get to without first taking the bike out of the way.. The pod in the center (yeah, I have 3) is for my ebike batteries, all pods are very quickly removable, and I'll be damned if I can tell any difference with them on or not flying wise. This trip was a proof of concept for the 1 big pod on one wing only concept, besides getting a free breakfast, one result being my main baggage area was cavernous instead of crammed, all kinds of room left over. Two big pods.....I really don't need that much room, this mix of pods is perfect and gives me many options.

RWM - It's for watching to see if a G500, Global Express or Delta is going to run over you here at KBRD (whilst obeying your instructor and taxiing at a walking speed...)

Lake Clark Pass early afternoon today. Nice trip till we got to the west side of the inlet. Rain, fog then a wild ride into PAMR. Reminded me of my 135 days, hats off to the guys/girls that still do it.

Re: Where did you fly today?

Wow great shot! Clearing off finally here today on the Kenai Peninsula after 2 days of heavy rain. Now snow is up on the mountain at my back door. The snow was not up there yesterday! First of the year so coming down this way soon. Two small patches survived all summer. We kind of talk bet as to if the snow will survive or not through each summer. It was cold spring this year yet a fantastic September and October :D . Keith of Gwin's Lodge Cooper Landing

Re: Where did you fly today?

We didn’t go far, in fact just three laps around the patch at Santa Paula but it was the first time getting Mama and the two monkeys in back airborne in our own plane after a very long wait. We’ve owned the plane for all of the little guy’s life and most of the big one’s. We’ve battled most all of the things that hinder operating your own plane and It couldn’t have been done without my Sweetheart standing by me. It was to say the least a very sweet day. ImageImage
