Hey Joe, it is pretty hard to beat JC. We talked about Smiley as a base camp. I'm for anywhere with fire. Showers are a nice touch. June is good because the forest fires aren't usually an issue then.

I know there are so many more.

Guys, I'm not going to work on this this year so if you want to plan something, feel free.

Roger that Z.

Who got us the reservation last year?

OK people we need some discussion on this subject.

I would be fine with JC, Smiley, Minam. I think we should keep the difficultie level to where most anyone who wants to come can.

I don't really care where it is at but thought I'd add Chamberlain as an option. There is toilets and fire rings there and it is real prudy....pretty easy too.

I'd like to fly to different places with people and so I would be nice to be close to other strips...which is the nice thing about JC.

I thought that John the Gun Trader (Ass Hole Extraordinare) worked on that in the past and some other Maule Guy drove in to physically make the reservation.

Smiley Creek is good cus it has showers etc and a place for burgers across the street.

Could be a winner -Maybe 1st. or 2nd weekend in June ??? Apparently Smiley Creek lodge is not taking phone calls at this time -maybe in warmer part of the country.

I am far away

....but name the place and I'll be there. My son and I found Johnson Creek to be everything you guys said it would be last June. Also enjoyed Moose Creek.

If you do Montana...we camped at Meadow Creek last summer too. Just a georgous place and easy to get into. Out houses and firewood/fire rings are about the only amenity....but this is supposed to be backcountry right?

All you need is someone in Idaho to physically drop by and visit the caretakers.

Same here. How about at a hotspring location?

Atlanta on the middle fork of the Boise has both hot springs and a hot waterfall-shower. It is an uphill strip that is one way, and at a certain point, you are committed! Good sized strip (for backcountry) but not even close to the size of JC or MC. NOT a beginner strip at all. (Also a short hike to campground and another short one beyond to 'shower')
With reasonable experience or training, though, it is a piece 'o cake.
Only been there in the fall. If the river is running too high in the spring, the 'hot' springs might be full of cold water. (another disclaimer)

I'm a fan of JC for its central location to other strips and definately in the first part of June.

Does anyone know if there has been any talk about rebuilding BC lodge? I sent an email last fall to the owners but never got a reply from them.

A couple of thoughts on Big Creek and Smiley Creek: Big Creek is pay for camping with limited camp sites. Also with the lodge gone, it might not be as appealing. Smiley Creek, while great accomodations, is a pretty good distance from other strips. Chamberlain or Moose Creek might be good options, although more sparse in the accomodations.

There are NO accomodations at Chamberlain... and you gotta walk to the ranger station from the campground at Moose just to get water...Forget all these other strips for a rather large fly in. JC is where you want to go and fly out to them for day flights.. Smiley is good in that it has a place to get showered and such but again it's far from all the others and it's on a main road which kind of gets away from the back country experience. I'm going to JC like I do every year. And I have it on good authority  that you just don't go to JC for the reservation... :o
