185 Abrasion Boots

Hey guys (gals etc)-
Majorly restoring a 61 185 and looking to see if the Cessna PN: S1938-3-68 00 was still the only thing out there rubber boot wise.
Horz has already been rebuilt and reskinned , so no interest in the leading edge change mod -(although cool for a working bush wagon.) Any additional info welcomed.. new adhesives, products etc etc.
Thanks,
Duncan

Re: 185 Abrasion Boots

I don't know if this is adequate for your purposes, but a few years ago, I decided to put heavy vinyl tape on the leading edge of my P172D's horizontal tail surfaces, a product I bought from Sporty's: https://www.sportys.com/pilotshop/prote ... -4-in.html. While I don't go into gravel strips all that often, I've probably used them a couple dozen times since adding the tape. It is still in pretty good shape, and it has protected the leading edge pretty well from dings in the paint or dents from small gravel. I'm sure it wouldn't do a thing for anything large being tossed up, but so far, so good.

Re: 185 Abrasion Boots

I use 1300L for adhesive. It works great.

I tried to avoid the Cessna part too. I bought rubber from a couple sources. I didn't like the generic boot I got from Spruce (I don't remember the part number). The material was too thin and didn't fit right. The Cessna part S1938-3-68.00 is what you want. It has the right taper and fits the horizontal well. Yingling or Air Power have them (as well as other sources).

You will also need to seal the trailing edge of the boot. There are a couple options, and it may depend on what you can find (that's always my challenge). I used 3M Seam Sealer 8367.

Thanks for the input... Looks like the only real way to go. I didn't think about the back edge... good point.

The best place to buy abrasion boots is Yingling in Wichita.

Thanks I have used YL over the years many times.
Airpower had them in stock $15.00 cheaper.

Re: 185 Abrasion Boots

Fishhauler,

I did an in depth write up on installing the boots here on BCP a couple years ago on another boot thread.
Not sure how to find it but shouldn't be too hard to find as I don't post often.
