1973 182P prop replacement

Good day all,

I may into a prop replacement for a 73' 182P?

Recommendations?

Is 3 blade and option? Any real advantage? Worth the extra cost?

For us Canadian Buyers... Any advantage in ordering from a U.S. Supplier?

Any other information greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Re: 1973 182P prop replacement

Macdon, I'd say your crazy to not go with a MT. But they are very pricey. Not much difference in going with a US supplier or Canadian. I priced out a bunch from both sides of the line a couple weeks ago and prices are very close.
If you are running stock 0-470, I'm not sure how much advantage you get with a 3 blade. One nice thing is that you gain prop clearance. You also gain weight way out there on the nose... I have a 3 blade Hartzell on my 180 that I'd love to sell and upgrade. But the exchange rate is killer for us Canadians right now...

A1....what kind of price quotes were you typically getting for a replacement?

About how much more for MT setup?

Thanks

Re: 1973 182P prop replacement

MT was pretty much 17k. 88" mac was around 12 all in with spinner and governor.
My hartzell is a great prop, but at 84 lbs it makes a 45lb MT look pretty awesome...

Re: 1973 182P prop replacement

You should be able to get a 2 blade MT for 12-13k, we did just a couple months ago. 2 blade is a better fit for an O470 anyways, 3 blades are for 260 and up mostly

US dollars? Convert that to Canadian and your just shy of 16. Then ship and install...

Re: 1973 182P prop replacement

If present prop is 2 Blade stay with that. If you want a 3 blade overhaul engine before 3 blade - if not overhaul you'll get insane amounts of vibration . On crankshaft there are "harmonic weights" that ride on bushings that take a "set" when engine is broken in after overhaul. Several owners have tried to go from 3 blade to 2 blade without overhauling engine with out overhauling with really poor results- once on a 310 other on 206 .Beware

Re: 1973 182P prop replacement

Definitely go for the MT 2 blade.
I do own a 182 P , 1973 and it will change your plane, guaranteed you will be super happy.
16 pounds lighter than the 2 blade Hartzell I replaced
Quick throttle response
Super good braking power it will make slow steep approaches very easy
Smooth
Looks very nice too.

Might be a bit more expensive but everytime you overhaul it, its like getting a brand new prop :)

Re: 1973 182P prop replacement

Wondering what the differences were with your Hartzel setup Moto? Weighed the 204 82" McCauley we removed and the new 2-blade MT, all associated parts included, and I lost 8 pounds overall. Was hoping for more like what you lost, but still happy with 8 pounds and haven't got to fly it yet. And yes it looks friggin awesome [emoji1]

Including spinner we got a difference of 16 pounds, when weighted.

Re: 1973 182P prop replacement

What is the difference in the overhaul costs of an MT prop compared to a M prop for example?

Is there a specailzed shop that is is required or can it be done at most prop shops?

Living here in Canada does it mean that I have to pack it up and send it out for weeks at a time if I have an issue or need the prop dressed?

Re: 1973 182P prop replacement

I looked into new prop prices a while back for my 180--
Mac C203 $8K-ish at the prop shop
3-blade Hartzell $10K-ish at the prop shop
2-blade MT $12K-ish + crate & freight
