1978 Cessna 180 Repairs

This is kind of a fun project at Aircraft Structural Repair. Previously just had one owner, who purchased it new. 528.2 hrs total time.

Pushed it in the shop on October 27th, but lots of other stuff going on in the hangar and customers airplanes have priority, so not sure when I’ll be back on it. There’s just the boss/owner and myself but we do get a lot done.

We call her “Trophy Wife”. There’s a backstory on that, perhaps I’ll tell it at some point, I’ll think on it for now.

I borrowed Dusty one day and we did get most of the two person riveting done, I’ll have to take some pictures next week if I get time.

High speed taxi, a little bit of wing work on one wing, a little more on the other.

Thanks for posting this since I find 180 threads very interesting. Just hope I don't need similar service.

Re: 1978 Cessna 180 Repairs

Another "high speed taxi" accident, not the first one I've heard of.
They always make me wonder if there's more to the story.
We had one at my airport not long ago-- a guy (not a licensed pilot) decided to high-speed taxi his new motor glider--
he managed to run way off the runway & whack a big red distance remaining sign with the RH wing.
Wing was removed & after a month or so was repaired by a local shop.
Welcome to aviation.

Re: 1978 Cessna 180 Repairs

If it was a taxi test and not intended for flight, the NTSB will not classify it as an Accident (substantial damage). Therefore no accident report will be on record. Depending on the occurrence there are two things to remember, not intended for flight and it was a gust of wind.

However it might be different re insurance coverage.
There's full coverage, not in flight coverage, and not in motion coverage.
It's my understanding that once you cross that hold short line,
you are considered to be in flight.

Looks like some repairs were done to the RH forward door post--
did the gearbox get damaged?

Ummmm,. you didn't notice in one of those images, the entire lower belly under the doors is GONE? Might imply some gearbox issues. :D

Did the plane originally come from northern MN by any chance?

Re: 1978 Cessna 180 Repairs

I’m not sure where the old boy was from that bought it new.

Yes, the right hand gearbox was replaced along with the foreword and aft gearbox bulkheads. If they have good factory paint, we don’t reprime, that’s why the different colors.

Sorry my pics aren’t great, I think the cover over my phone cameras is cracked and it’s doing strange things.

I never planned on coming out of retirement as to posting things again, but In a Backcounty Christmas spirit of weakness i succumbed to the internal strain.

That looks so clean! I have an old pipeline plane, and you’d swear they were hauling crude in it!

Re: 1978 Cessna 180 Repairs

“Trophy Wife” enjoyed resting peacefully over an extended holiday season after the quick visit by our wiring guru Matt to rerun the juice carriers through the bulkheads.

Image

Matt doesn’t have time to spare, but he makes things happen and we make him laugh so he accommodates us and we appreciate it!

I did get to spend a couple of days in January on her and buttoned up the floor and what not. The airplanes’s soul starts coming alive again once you put the flap handle in. Who doesn’t love flaps? :) Perhaps that jogs someone’s memory….

Image

Image

A fresh coat of paint on a set of overhauled gear from inventory and it wasn’t long before the Trophy was standing proud once more.

Selkirk sure has a nice product with their new cowlings. Who doesn’t love cool things? :)

Dusty, (ACSR and Trophy Wife owner) and I washed the dust off and she’s headed to the paint booth. What a beautiful morning!

It’s amazing what a little color does! We haven’t pulled her out of the booth yet, but Wow!
