2017 Total Eclipse Map

I have seen several total eclipse maps. I would like to find one that has all the Idaho backcountry strips on it. I know that Smiley Creek is in a great spot for the eclipse.

Little more detailed for each state.

Scroll to the bottom with the larger state pictures. You can click on the map but then you only see the map. In the box of the state, click on the blue name of the state you wish to see. There will be far more detail along with a list (lower down) of the towns that are on the path.

Re: 2017 Total Eclipse Map

My place in Madras Oregon is almost dead center line. Madras is 6000 population. The powers that be estimate 50,000 coming to town. I have a great spot. We are up on Round Butte Hill. The road to the top is getting closed. I can walk up from my house in 15 minutes. I got 20 friends coming so far. Should be a good time. Cheers...Rob

Re: 2017 Total Eclipse Map

FWIW, I called the Madras airport manager in January to find out if they would allow camping on the field on 8/21. They told me that they were working on reservations because there had already been so many people who were looking to find a place to observe the eclipse. Around the same time, other friends found that the park they wanted to camp at was already full. Sounds like a good excuse to mingle with the other crazies to me. Reservation made.

Re: 2017 Total Eclipse Map

Madras looks like a great place to go, I now plan to fly in there for the eclipse. The airport is gearing up for 500 or more planes and they have arrangements for camping either at the airport or very close by, you can call Berg Air 541-475-6947. Also Oregon is having a "Solar Festival" there, https://www.oregonsolarfest.com/ is planning a big 4 Day event with music vendors shuttles and a lot more! Here is the town website, http://madraseclipse.com/ They are taking reservations at airport because they just might run out of room for all the planes, I told them if they needed any advise on big fly-in logistics to call Aktahoe.

Re: 2017 Total Eclipse Map

Central Oregon may be a bit of a mess during this event. The locals are already being encouraged to stock up on groceries well in advance because all of the stores are expected to be drained. They are also being encouraged to rent out rooms or space for people to stay/camp. Several hotels are being acused of scams and changing prices on people. Emergency services are setting up the joint command Emergency Operations Center for seven days surround the event and calling in several additional air medical resources to be on standby (including the National Guard). Big Summit Prairie in the Ochoco mountains has taken a permit for 30,000 people during the event...four days before the opening of bow season  . Smith Rock State Park has done the same for a bunch of extra people. I envision something between burning man and the rainbow people. I just hope too many of them don't decide to stay behind.

Looking at the eclipse map in Idaho it looks like the following strips will be able to see the total solar eclipse: Garden Valley, Idaho City, Weatherby, Atlanta, Graham, Warm Springs, Deadwood Dam, Bruce Meadows, Sulpher Creek, Landmark, Upper Loon, Stanley, Smiley Creek, Twin Bridges, and Copper Basin. I'll be up there camping at one of these spots.

Re: 2017 Total Eclipse Map

I have been planning to view the eclipse from my family's place in Mackay but I'm not sure now. The local region is expecting a influx of 500,000 people and I'm really not looking forward to that. I may just stay home, hide out in the garage and step out into the street during the eclipse.

Re: 2017 Total Eclipse Map

I think a lot of areas expect more folks than will really arrive but if you are in the path, it will get hectic. "They" think that Casper will nearly double with the idea of one of the highest altitudes, nearest to high noon (less atmosphere to look through for the science types), and one of the driest (least likely for clouds). CPR has had a meeting with what they plan for the air traffic and parking Their answer to airport camping wasn't no but hell no. I was planning to be airborne and video the event from on high but it is starting to sound a little suicidal.

Rob, let us know where you are thinking. We plan on coming up, but I'm afraid places like Smiley Creek are going to be slammed. Might have to go a bit more off the beaten path.

I was wondering about CPR. I'm planning to take the family up there in the 182, and have been wondering how early I need to get there just to have a place to park the plane. Of course there isn't much to do in Casper, so I can get there at 7am but then have to entertain a wife and two young kids for hours until 2 minutes of darkness descend, and then line up with an entire ramp full of other pilots all jamming up the NAS at the exact same time. Definitely going to be making use of ADS-B traffic and flight following that day.

Most people will be driving into town and I think pilots will inherently spread out; I know of multiple fly-in's along the totality path within trip distance of Denver. Still, the more central airports are going to draw some unique skillsets. Going to be a head-on-a-swivel kind of day I think.
