OK...MARK IT ON YOU CALENDARS! The 2nd Annual Straight-Tail Cessna 182 Fly-In will be July 16-18 at Smiley Creek, Idaho. U87. Should be warmer this year and maybe even snow-free! Information is sparse at this time other than the date and location. I can be contacted here or at my [email protected]. Stay tuned...

We will probably stop by with our straight tail but we will be camping at Johnson Creek. For my wife and I, Johnson Creek is much more desirable and fun.

Hey Phil,

Last year’s fly-in was a lot of fun. Can’t wait to get back to Smiley Creek!

Re: 2nd Annual Straight-Tail Cessna 182 Fly-In

Thanks for pointing that out! Yes, it is the Straight-Tail Cessna 182 Fly-In. It is a public strip and anyone can use it but I hope we can get all the S/T 182’s parked/camped together on the West side of the runway. Maybe we could even set some kind of record for the most parked together in the 21st century! Hopefully other aircraft will park/camp on the east side. More info to come...!

Re: 2nd Annual Straight-Tail Cessna 182 Fly-In

I have picked up the ball for the second annual straight tail fly-in that Phil Ackerman was working on. If you haven't heard Phil had a massive heart attack in Feb and did not make it. His wife wanted this fly-in to continue and that is one of the reasons that I have decided to carry on in Phil's behalf. July 16-18. a BBQ Sat, about 5:00 and some time around the fire Saturday evening. some have asked for me to give a demonstration of my method of scattering human ashes out of my plane. ( a ground demo only.)

Thanks for that Roger I am not the swiftest when it comes to computer business. I like the sound of a few of you on this forum thinking of joining us. We had about 20 straight tail 182s last year and I hope for Phil's sake we can get more there this year. skybobb.

Re: 2nd Annual Straight-Tail Cessna 182 Fly-In

Mark, it is good to hear you are planning on coming to the 182 Straight tail fly-in. I don't need anything. I plan on having everything for a BBQ on Sat. evening. if you are still there. there is a lodge with in walking distance of the airport. If you need a noon meal.

I have a little poem that I have been working on to honor Phil Ackerman and all of his efforts on this and the first annual fly-in. While I am walking in the morning with my dog Buddy I have been working on reciting this poem that I will do on sat around the camp fire. Bring a camp chair if you plan on staying for that. Some of the pilots have asked me to share my method of scattering ashes out of our 182s. that will be about 1:00 on Sat. afternoon.

Re: 2nd Annual Straight-Tail Cessna 182 Fly-In

Smoke - Smoke - Smoke

I am still planning (or hoping) on arriving at Smiley Creek for the fly-in Saturday morning but watching the smoke and TFR's pretty closely this week.

The smoke in the Bitterroot Valley has already been down to 1/4 mile.

Any other comments or Pireps as we get closer to the event ??

Thanks - Dave

Hi Dave, I’ve been watching Smiley Creek fly-in comments on the Straight tail Cessna FB site. Bob Bement is monitoring the smoke situation. He will make a call on the fly-in closer to Friday. For now it’s still on. Roger.

Re: 2nd Annual Straight-Tail Cessna 182 Fly-In

Folks are starting to arrive at Smiley for the fly-in. 2 planes there as of now and photos they posted showed blue skies.

Just got the official word from Bob that the fly-in is a “Go”.

Great and thanks for the update -

I plan on being there tomorrow morning. Visibility in the Bitterroot Valley right now is about 4 miles in smoke but improving to the south.

Thanks - Dave
