Have you modified your aircraft? STC? STOL Kit? Major rebuild from just a data plate?

Re: 337

In simple terms it is the form the FAA uses to record every change, modification, or repair of an airplane. So a form 337 is required to install a radio, repair a plane after an accident, and everything in between.

Re: 337

So its a "record" of the change/work etc but NOT an approval document

337's are a catch all... For the most part they are used as a record for major change and alterations... For instance, any time a STC is installed onto an aircraft a 337 must be filled out listing that STC number and sent into OK City to go with the permanent records for that aircraft.

BUT.. It can also be used for a "field approval" through a FSDO office... In this case, the 337 is filled out but not signed off as completed, sent to the local FSDO office and "hopefully" signed off for approval then sent back with the magic rubber stamp and then the modification can be performed.

Re: 337

I'm not a Canuck but you're talking apples and oranges here, TC uses a different system of maintenance recording.

If you want to export a US registered aircraft into Canada then there is a conformity process that addresses 337s that were applied to the aircraft and decides if they're legit for a canadian registered aircraft.

Re: 337

When I imported my plane I was warned that TC would not accept any 337 that could not be shown to be in accordance with an STC. My understanding is that they would result in a plane that was imported with 337 "field approvals" failing to gain a Canadian airworthiness certificate, at least until the work could be justified with an STC.

Treat this as hearsay - I really am not an expert.

He is right. TC does not accept field approvals. So 337s that are for things like radio installs or STC installs are fine, but 337s for field approvals won't be accepted. So that work/mod can be undone/removed or you can't try to get a LSTC done. Good luck and lots of $$$ needed for the LSTC option.

Re: 337

David, you’re fresh out of school, can you explain the Major Repair or Alteration Report requirement? When does it have to be submitted, and when not?

You know Darryl they never even touched on major alteration reports in school. I was very disappointed about it actually, as I was hoping to get some clarity on the subject. So I'm trying to wade through those waters now...

Re: 337

I get different opinions depending on who I talk to about it. I’ve had some STC installs done without the report, and some with. I’m my own director of maintenance, so I make it my concern to try to understand this stuff.

I’ll be curious to read a summary after you figure it out. I see how you need to do this homework. I take you for a guy who will do many major rebuilds and mods in his career.
