Re: 3rd Annual Red Hills Fly-In - Memorial Day Weekend

Packed and ready to go. Sadie getting worried that I packed the plane and we didn't leave for somewhere. I can't convince her that she is going. I guess she will settle down tomorrow when we leave for the airport.

Tentative schedule for Sat is breakfast at Lodi somewhere around 8:30 or 9:00 then fly back to Red Hills. Water balloon bombing and spot landing contest starting about 11:30am to noon until whenever. Then potluck dinner starting about 6:00-7:00pm. After dinner, campfire and bull session until people are ready to go to bed. Sun morning a hosted pancake breakfast by the Moyles. If anyone wants to bring some juice or bacon it might help with the breakfast. After breakfast, schedule is open for fly outs, return home or kick back and relax for the day (open schedule). Other ideas or things participants have in mind are appreciated.

Look forward to seeing old friends and meeting new ones.

Re: 3rd Annual Red Hills Fly-In - Memorial Day Weekend

Had a great time at this little fly-in yesterday. Got to see some flying friends I haven't seen in a while and meet some new ones. I think it was about 12 or 13 airplanes showed up with some locals driving in. The hosts, Jack and Myrna Moyle were super nice people and have a great little setup there in the foothills. Thanks to svanarts, Hawk and rfinkle for putting on a fun weekend!

Heres some pics:

Shade was popular  Wasn't too hot, really pleasant in the shade...

Same Husky on takeoff trying to line up for the balloon drop, which didn't count because one had to be 50' or higher to play by the rules

Re: 3rd Annual Red Hills Fly-In - Memorial Day Weekend

Our first (and not last!) trip to Red Hills.
It was great to meet some new folks, even if it did take us a loooonnnnnnggggg time to get there.
Jack and Myrna are the most gracious people we have met in a long time and we plan to stop in and visit anytime we are up that area.

A big Thank You to Scott, Rich and Bob (and Sadie) for putting on a wonderful event, Very nicely done guys.
We will put our photos and videos together and let you know when we have them done.

Re: 3rd Annual Red Hills Fly-In - Memorial Day Weekend

We really did have a good turnout this year. Jack and Myrna really enjoyed all the airplanes and especially all the pilots. We'll hopefully have things a little more organized next year.

Because I'm too lazy to write it again, you can read my write up here: https://airprayer.wordpress.com/2016/05/29/red-hills-3rd-annual-fly-in-2/

Here is Aaron winning our spot landing contest:

And here is all the raw video footage I shot. Expect to see a nicely put together version from Rich Finkle soon.

Re: 3rd Annual Red Hills Fly-In - Memorial Day Weekend

Just wanted to post one more thing on Red Hills. I know a lot of people frequent this website of all different skills and abilities. The average reader tends to be on the higher end of those skills and abilities but there are some folks who are just starting out. Please... do NOT attempt to land at Red Hills Strip unless you have mountain flying and short strip experience. We state this plainly in the waiver, it's stated plainly in the safety video rfinkle has put together. Yet we had someone show up in a 152 who had ZERO mountain flying experience and this was their first off-airport landing. This person landed long and barely got stopped by the end of the strip. Please get a mountain flying checkout before coming here and preferably fly in with a capable instructor first if you've never done these kind of landings before. All capable pilots are welcome, but the land owners stated that the first crash they have, the fly-ins are over. We don't want that. Next year if we see the same lack of skill demonstrated by any pilot attempting to land the land owners will deny permission to land there to that pilot until they have the requisite skill. Then they will be welcome to come back. We've just kind of been assuming that every pilot that shows up will only attempt to land if they are capable. No more assuming. :)

Re: 3rd Annual Red Hills Fly-In - Memorial Day Weekend

We had a decent turn out for Memorial Day weekend at Red Hills. The weather was pleasant and I doubt anyone even used their sleeping bag on Saturday night.

Several members arrived on Friday and went into Jamestown for a good Mexican dinner with the owners, Jack & Myrna. We headed out on Saturday morning to Lodi (1O3) to meet up with other attendees on their way to Red Hills and enjoyed a good breakfast. It is a great place to eat and watch those guys/gals who like to jump out of perfectly good airplanes.

Hawk experienced an oil cooler failure on the way back to Red Hills and was thankful he wasn't on a long cross country. He had lost a couple quarts of oil and made quite a mess of his airplane. I understand the plane will be flying tomorrow with a new oil cooler.

Saturday afternoon included a skills demonstration with a spot landing contest and a water balloon bombing contest. Everyone had fun and ended up under the shade trees telling lies for the afternoon.

Here is a short trip report of what Red Hills is all about. Enjoy!

Nice, Rob! I love the lineup of gear shots like that. Watch it disappear into the C170 with the rear seat still installed.

Re: 3rd Annual Red Hills Fly-In - Memorial Day Weekend

That was the first time flying with all 4 of us plus the dog and gear to go on an overnight trip. The 170 handled it like a champ though. Couldn't have done it without the extended baggage compartment!

Welcome to big house camping! Yeah, it's amazing the gear you can hide away in a plane!
