I am also thinking of dropping in from NC.

Christina,

Can you please elaborate on "fly in fishing nearby". I am an avid fly fisherman and seek all opportunities to fly and fish.

Obxbushpilot,
There is fly-in fishing at both Blairstown (1N7, really just on the other side of the mountain from Pegasus, about 10-15 min flight), and at Andover-Aeroflex (12N).

At Blairstown (where I am based), there is a nice lake that is owned by the airport and on airport property. Pilots are welcome to fish there. It is loaded with both bass and trout. One of my favorite spots is on the dam at the south end of the lake, the water is clear and you can see a multitude of fish when it is calm. There is also the Paulinskill River less than 1/4 mile up the road to the west of the airport, and has good rainbow trout fishing (stocked every Thursday). If you like fly fishing it is good.

Andover-Aeroflex is about a 10 min cub flight to the NE of Blairstown, and there is a lake at each end of the runway (airport is inside Kitatinny Valley State Park). There is good fishing in both lakes, but the one on the north end (Lake Aeroflex) is deeper and has bigger fish -- known for its land-locked salmon.

Here is NJ fishing license info: http://www.state.nj.us/dep/fgw/fishneed.htm. There is a link to online license purchases (2-day out of state visitors license is $9).

BTW, there is also a small private strip called Grover, maybe ~30 miles to the west of Pegasus (east of Hazleton), I met the owner a couple months ago and he has fly in fishing (a small river runs alongside the property). He mentioned to me at the time that he welcomed our type of airplanes, camping, and possibly hosting fly in events in the future. I have not had a chance to fly out there and check it out though, or talk to him further about it.

Christina,

Thank you for all of the great local fishing information. Seems like there are a lot of good opportunities.

There is some BIG trout in McMichaels Creek which runs next to the Pegasus Airport. I believe that the land in that area is owned by a private fishing club so there is little or no access

Looks like great weather for the fly in. My weekend has fallen apart, but I'm going to try and stop in for a few hour Saturday.

Here is a "post action" report.

Friday morning we set up the 20 x 40 tent, dragged out the tables and chairs, got ice for the coolers, etc. and sweated!

First in on Friday was Mike in his MXT7-180.
Image

A couple hours later Claudius in his Air Cam and Tom in his Maule MX7-180 swooped in and set up camp for the weekend.
Image.

At the same time Kenny and Debbie showed up by car and tents started popping up.
Image

One fellow chapter member, Rich, decided to do a little "red neck" camping in the back of his pickup truck!
Image

Rich, John, and Tim from the chapter helped direct traffic and do odds and ends. Pam ran around with a clip board signing people in. We cooked up hamburgers and dogs, had potato salad (Thanks to John's wife) and chips, and I think one or two beers were consumed! We had two good size telescopes to observe with and one had a solar filter for peeks at the sun which showed only a single sunspot.
Image

Friday evening, we got a campfire started and tried a little more telescope watching. Alas, between the full moon and haze not much was seen!

The next morning was warm and ground fog hung around waiting to burn off. The coffee was put on and Rich Hosking's wife showed up with still hot sticky buns! HMMMMM!
Image

Pretty soon the planes started arriving! Gene landed in his beautiful Rans S-7 and immediatley attracted a crowd.
Image

He was quickly followed by Perry in his Maule MX7-180C and Walter in his Cessna 180.
Image
Image

Please excuse me if I get some of these pictures mixed up. It was fast and furious for a little while.
A gorgeous orange/black Maule M5-180 (Jerry) was next.
Image

Followed by a PA 15 (Walter), PA 18 Super Cub(Christina), Zenith 701(Ulis), and an Aeronca Chief(Bill).

Last in was James in his Maule M5-235. Lunch was cooked and consumed, rides were given, and many stories were told. Got some more time on solar observing. A few stayed Saturday night and pizza was ordered in. James cooked some great organic steaks which he generously shared. And I think I saw a bottle of wine make a brief appearance before disappearing! In the evening we watched "Dead Stick Takeoffs" on the "big" screen.

The next morning we loaded up the Air Cam and three Maules and made our way to Sky Manor, about 20 minutes away, for breakfast. Then it was back to Pegasus to pack up and depart.

For myself, I met a lot of great people and really enjoyed sharing time and stories with them. Thanks to everyone who helped out! =D>

Rod,
I would like to repost this on this site as well:

Rod,

I can't say enough! Your event was great. You have a really wonderfully field. The guys and gals are 1st class, as are you. I never expected such kindness and great hospitality. The bad new is that I will do everything I can to be back next year. It was nice to see the Maules and More Maule pilots. 8)

To Perry and James, I hope to see you guys again soon.

The Essex Sky Park (W48) Wings and Wheels Fly-in is on September 18, 2010. There is camping on the field. It would be great to see a lot of East coast and mid west Maules. When things settle down we can relax on the porch and have some friendly spot landing Comp. (This was my attempt to see everyone again )

Again, Rod Thank you so much for a wonderful time and I know Claudius feels the same way. =D> =D> =D> =D>

Take care and tell everyone, thanks!

Sorry I missed all the fun. Life just got in the way. Good to see that Tom and Carlos made it up to represent Maryland. Maybe next year will work out it'll probably be windy.
