ABI double puck calipers rubbing axle

Hello all,

I am installing the ABI 199-62 kit on my 73 182P (tubular landing gear) and the top of the landing gear axle fitting (the piece that connects the main landing gear tube and the axle) is interfering with the top of the caliper preventing the caliper pin engagement with the torque plate. I called airframes Alaska and they suggested I index the torque plate so instead of the caliper sitting straight up and down like the old single puck, the would be sitting at a "2 and 10" position. Has anyone had his issue? And if so what is the fix? I'll see if I can download a pic or two.

Appreciate any help I can get!

How much interference? I don't like removing material but a limited amount might be ok. Think about caliper position and a flat tire.

Re: ABI double puck calipers rubbing axle

I have never installed these on a 182 so forgive me if this is wrong for your exact application, but I believe the torque plate is on the wrong way. Take off axle and flip it around so that the "jog" is pushing outboard. That will push the caliper outboard towards wheel and away from gear leg. It makes a substantial difference, like 5/8" or so. You may find it works better to put the caliper pins into the torque plate before mounting the torque plate if the gear leg still poses an issue when getting the pins started into the holes.

Image from install manual shows how I describe:

Edit: I’m not so sure. Looked at old pics and plane. On my scout, they mounted as I describe above. On my maule, they are mounted like you showed in your original post. Still might be worth a shot but will depend on rotor/axle spacing I guess.

Re: ABI double puck calipers rubbing axle

Thanks for the replies. We tried turning the torque plate around but that did not work - the tire wouldn’t go onto the axle fully. It looks like my IA figured out a way to get it to work though.

Re: ABI double puck calipers rubbing axle

Sure, they ended up taking a small amount of material off of the caliper.

Did you have an issue when/if trying to mount caliper forward of axle?

Re: ABI double puck calipers rubbing axle

Yeah that’s where we ended up mounting it - exactly in the same place as the old single puck Cleveland’s. The top of the ABI caliper but the pin was what was rubbing. When I called ABI they said they haven’t heard of this issue (which Is kind of surprising) and that it may have been how my axle fitting was forged - maybe a little wider than some/most. I suppose on other tube gear 182s the caliper fitting probably wouldn’t be an issue.
