I may have bought a Maule M-5 from your buddy Dick about 8 or 9 years ago.

Re: Air Park living on the cheap

Gary,

That's a fantastic spot. I lived a stones throw from your lot just off of Prospect for 9 months and we really loved it. I hope things have changed but there were known meth cooks in the neighborhood back in 2001 just on the other side of Salmon Creek. Surely they've blown themselves up by now. But they broke into my garage and got me for thousands of dollars of camping and climbing gear and my mountain bike. My last night there, I'd locked everything up and was camping in my truck (with a camper shell) to head out early for Colorado the next morning. Damn glad I had my 9mm with me - the only time I've ever had to rack the slide in defense in my life. I'm can only hope that meth head got the fear of God like I did. He didn't expect someone to be sleeping in that truck he was trying to break into. My wife tended bar at Sirens in town - the night a sheriff's deputy was drunk and holding someone over the railing by their feet about to drop them 25 ft in the drink. That's a colorful town.

You building a pygmy? Those are great boats.

I'm glad you got your own little slice of heaven. Still too much rain for me. I love me some Colorado!

Flyhound wrote:General Aviation News used to have a special website that captured all of the airparks in the country. They stopped charging for access to the site a couple of years ago, but I think they also stopped maintaining the list. It still seems pretty complete, and the website gives links to the detailed information on each of the airparks listed. You can search by state, or you can use the national map to get started. I found this really useful when we were considering life on an airpark.

http://livingwithyourplane.com/directory-2/

We finally stopped searching for an airpark home because we are almost fully retired and I don't know how many more years of flying I have in me. There are financial as well as questions about long term competency for the kind of flying I enjoy, As a result, we focused on finding a lot we could build a retirement home on that was close to an airport while I'm still in the game. Water access was important, a mild climate was important and affordability was important. Affordability is a relative term though, and we did not expect to find dirt cheap lots with easy access to salt water, We wound up building a home in Washington State on Port Townsend Bay. We are 4 minutes from the airport, we are located just above a state park on the water and we have views of a snow capped volcano (mount Baker) from our front deck. We think we've died and gone to heaven. The house is almost done, and our move in date is 2/23/16, less than 2 weeks away. Anybody want to help us move???

Did you fly when you were here? I've been flying off 0S9 since 1997, so if you were an airport rat I probably know you. Unfortunately like most places, rural or metro, still lots of dopers around. And lots of old hippies (and hippy mentality) in Port Townsend. BTW that's Chimacum Creek- Salmon Creek drains into Discovery Bay about 5 miles SW of the airport. And FYI if anyone is looking to move here, Mister 701 has a lot for sale at the east end of Prospect.

No I was not a pilot. You're right - chimacum creek. I lived right on the other side and we would walk out dogs down for a swim every night. I was only there 9 months though before boiling to Colorado.

Re: Air Park living on the cheap

Fast Eddie with your Carbon Cub - have you looked at Mid Valley Airpark (E98) 30 miles south of Albuquerque? We had the house next door to us (with a beautiful big hangar) just sell to a non-pilot car guy for $194K. It probably needs some work, but the hangar is definitely worth it. Another home sold for just over $200K - very nice with another nice hangar to a non-pilot family!

On my street there is another home for sale now - probably around $200K and probably a couple of more that will be on the market within a year or two.

Now is the time to buy here at Mid Valley - I would really like to see some pilots buy homes here!

Re: Air Park living on the cheap

Jan, I'm looking for a CFI in the area that wouldn't have qualms teaching in the student's (me) plane that would be home built experimental. Any leads?

Re: Air Park living on the cheap

deckofficer,

We do have some instructors in the Albuquerque area and at least one at Mid Valley that might want to do that. I will ask around and get back to you. There may be instructors located at Las Cruces, Deming, or Santa Teresa that would be more convenient to your location - I will ask our pilot friend in Las Cruces if she has any recommendations.

On a different topic - you should check out the NM Pilots Association website at http://www.nmpilots.org/
We meet for various fly-in events during the year, some of them are at backcountry airstrips such as Negrito which is not far from Glenwood and Reserve NM.

Also we are members of the Arizona Pilots Association - see their website at http://azpilots.org/. We meet them at Grapevine near Phoenix and also at Double Circle in southeast Arizona for their fly-ins.

Hopefully we will see you at one of our fly-ins this year!

Re: Air Park living on the cheap

Jan, thank you for beating the bushes for me. I plan to join your mentioned groups when I get settled in and have a PO box. Even though there are 3 air parks all within the same section where I'm moving to, the two days I was there, not much flying activity except Scott in his U/L. A willing CFI in one of these parks would be great but from the 4 folks that I talked to, they didn't know of any. Deming would be great, just under 30 miles to the north.

Re: Air Park living on the cheap

I made it. 3 days of packing up two residences, 1,100 mile jaunt with belongings in my enclosed auto transport trailer along with an electric car. Tire blew east of Tucson, spare still looking brand new as Ford covers it with carpet in the rear cargo area. Got in at 3:00 AM Friday for my first good sleep in 3 nights, and in my new place no less. It is better than I remember, feeling good about the purchase. Got unpacking same morning after 4 hours sleep, (beats 2 hour sleeps the previous 3 nights) then a "run" into town (Deming, NM, 29 miles away) to swing by the title company for some signatures, then the power company to transfer billing, and off to Wal-Mart for some low prep type of foodstuffs. Today Saturday finished most the unpacking and started to hook the PC up on my neighbor's wi-fi. And that is where I hit a snag. Since I never have used a PC to receive wi-fi, I bought the USB dongle that has an antenna and makes the PC able to receive like all laptops have done for years. Dick the neighbor offered his password and after installing the drivers I though I was good to go but no connection. Believing I could have messed up the install on the PC I checked on my lap top and no connection. Later on this evening the speed of connection trickled up to 1/4 the speed of old dial-up connection, so needless to say no pictures till I'm on my own DSL.

Congrats! I flew into deming a few times last month. I'm back east now. Too bad the timing didn't work to meet up!

When I was up in Feb to view and buy the place, blue skies, starry nights, and a temperature swing of 45 to 65. Now that I've been here two days, there is a element to our weather patterns that I should have researched....WIND and a lot. The locals in Deming when asked say it is normal for two months. Our strip is aligned with the prevailing winds, and even without a X wind, they are too high for me.

I will as soon as I get a real Internet connection.

If at some time ".....may need it someday", no worries, its here and it is cheap. Winds today 20 mph gusting to 40 mph. Just passing that along because it wasn't passed to me.

My rough guess there are around 40 built lots total for all 3 air parks and 4 times that un-sold lots. I believe the lowest lot cost is $3,500 and runway lots are $5,000. Hangar homes can be had for < $50K, maxing out at $200K which is 5 acres and a 80' X 60' insulated hangar with large thru and thru power doors and a two car power door, 2 story home and modern.

Home Sweet Hangar Home. After packing up the Norcal residence which entailed moving from a 2nd story, 150' of walkways to the parking area, man was it nice to be able to back the trailer right to the door.

Re: Air Park living on the cheap

What was once a small room addition for a guest bedroom has now become my HAM radio station, computer room, and a single bed for me. The master bedroom is now the guest bedroom because anyone willing to visit me in my very modest and desolate desert home deserves the bigger bedroom. The 2nd single bed that was in this small add on room has been moved into the hangar. Room for 4 visitors, the sofa and single bed in hangar goes to whoever lost the poker match to determine who wins the master bedroom.

BTW, today no winds, but when they do kick up I have tie downs on each side of my apron for visitors.

Always a priority, big screen TV. After getting DSL will probably get a Fire Stick for programs and local El Paso TV stations off an antenna.

deckofficer, You'll be a much better pilot for learning to fly in the wind. We have a gap wind here in Ellensburg that would rival most any area that prides itself on their wind. The graph lines are average wind speed, the maximum can be twice that speed.
Image

The main runway is aligned with the wind so landing isn't an issue, it's turning when taxiing to your parking that can be a problem. It's not too uncommon for a light plane to land and stay on the runway and call the FBO to get a couple people to come out and wing walk them to parking. Just keep telling your self, "The wind is your friend".

Central Washington University here has a pretty large Aviation program. Those students are well versed in wind operations by the time they finish.
