AirGlas fork with the IO550 Airbox issue

Hi,

I'm helping a gentleman that just got a new to him 182Q with the IO550 and the super up AirGlas strut.

Much to my surprise the shimmy damper (which is under the cowling) looks like it strikes the air box and knocks the airbox conduit off. so essentially the plane is always getting alternate air...not great for landing in dust. He's taking it to his A&P but I'm wondering if anyone in the tribe here has faced a similar issue.

Thanks!

Re: AirGlas fork with the IO550 Airbox issue

I’ve installed a number of airglas forks and they have nothing to do with the shimmy dampener.

Something incorrectly assembled after the fork was installed?

Could be the air box is cracked and dropping down or someone forget the supports that hold it up horizontal?

Broken motor mount tube?

Or something extra ugly induced by nose wheeling her in a vigorous porpoising event?

Regardless I wouldn’t fly her or tow by the nose gear without first pulling the cowl and giving it all a good look.

I just installed an Airglas fork on an M model and Rocket is correct, shimmy damper stays in the stock location. Looks to me like the ear broke off the shimmy damper and its up against the bottom of the airbox, should be an inch or two of space there.

I also agree with Rocket about not operating that thing until it's figured out.
