Alaska Airman's Show - May 2nd - 3rd - 2020

It is that time of year again!

Unless an issue (?) progresses to the point that we have travel restrictions imposed on us, I am currently planning on heading to the Alaska Airman's Show 2020 and arriving Friday May 1st and staying at the Millenium Hotel on Lake Hood.

Always hoping to meet up and share an adult beverage w/ backcountry pilot friends.

What say you ?

Thanks - Dave

Experience is what you get when you didn't get what you wanted.

I used vacation days over the weekend just to make sure I'd be there. Plus it's my birthday and winning the 180 will make it the best one ever!

If they cancel it, someone local should step up and do a BCP meetup. I would, but moved to WA a few months back. Sure is a different world down here.....But the shipping is great!!!!

IF it happens, there's a good chance I'll be there in the Stewart Systems booth.

The Gov shut the schools down until the end of March. I’d wager the Airman’s Show ain’t gonna fly. My dad had plans to go to. He’s bummed.

Tickets purchased to fly north....planning on going, until I hear otherwise. Staying at the Sheraton downtown for a change of pace from the Millenium.

The cargo pilot who was Alaska’s first case of COVID-19 stayed at the Sheraton.

Public multi-geographic human gatherings in May 2020...

I think we should all just accept that there is going to be a significant but temporary disruption to daily activity for the next three or five or eight months. That's not stupid, it's smart. The whole point of self-quarantine isn't to keep you from getting sick, it's to spread out the rate of infection to vulnerable groups to a level that medical services can effectively cope with it.

Half of the worlds' human population will probably contract Covid-19. About 1% of those people will die according to what is currently known. That number will go up or down DRAMATICALLY depending almost entirely on how many people become infected at the SAME TIME in any given geography, since there are a limited number of hospital beds, respirators, oxygen tanks, and medical personal to treat the people who find that they suddenly cannot breath on their own.

This doesn't have to be a life changing deal for everyone...most people who haven't recklessly overextended themselves should be able to keep their homes and businesses and airplanes and family members...but expecting to be able to go to the AK Airman's Show as usual is just ignorant or reckless or flat out stupid. The majority of the US's major cities are probably going to be on curfew by that time, which is the right thing to do, even though for most people we're talking about a common cold.

This pandemic isn't about how it affects YOU...it's about what YOU can do to lessen the overall impact to your community...and economy...and national security...and future opportunities. Give a little during this time of need. Just stay home.

Agree. I just re-joined after a long time away. The May show is a huge deal for Alaska Airman, understandable. But it is very disappointing to have only silence from them on this issue. [-X

Re: Alaska Airman's Show - May 2nd - 3rd - 2020

The Alaska Airmen’s Association is trying to figure out how to proceed. I called and talked with them yesterday and they said they would make a decision no later than March 27th, but probably sooner.
Maybe a simple phone call to them before bad mouthing them would be a better course of action. I guess when it’s all about you..well..it’s just all about you.

FWIW, the latest figures I've seen for Washington (state) show mortality rates at about 5.4% (1376 confirmed infections, 74 deaths). FWIW, it's easier to confirm deaths than infecteds. According to a couple reports I've read another factor in this is that hospitalizations for 40 and 50 somethings in the US approximate the numbers for 60+ demographics. About 30% of oldsters succumb. While most youngsters (40s to 50s) survive, but some have bad outcomes like lung damage or other organ problems.

Hammer's right. Just stay home (and self isolate).
