Re: Alaska Bushwheel gas "can"

[quote="OregonMaule"]I'm set to start walking to close gas stations for mogas. Got this folding hand truck at Home Depot, rated for 150 lbs Screw that $5.60 avgas. I'll take the $4.00 91 mogas

I use the Montague folding bike, and carry two 2+ gallon jugs easily, strapped to the bottom of the handle bars. I've carried well over 2000 gallons this way in the last 15 years with no mishaps, though the straps wore the handle bars real shiney! I like the handcart idea also, and it's not like you don't have room for it in a Maule! I especially like the fuel getting ideas when I'm at some place with no fuel of any type at the strip, ONLY at the town pump. Plus, I can buy lunch or whatever with the savings over Av gas. The only problem I could see is getting mistaken for a homeless person, seriously, we had one go through my area the other day with some kind wheeled setup. On a bike no one looks at you twice, like jogging through a neighborhood may draw less attention then walking. I've given this a lot of thought

So do the ABW bags come equipped with any spout at all or is a trip to home depot in order for everyone? Their website isn't clear.

Re: Alaska Bushwheel gas "can"

I don't see any mention of static discharge or bonding with the fuel bags. I re-read all the posts just to be sure. I checked the ABW site to see if they said anything about static; you know, conductive material like a Mr. Funnel or some other magic. So is static discharge not a risk here too like with plastic gas cans?

Post JC Report

My bags have paid for themselves in 1 short month. I did this by eliminating 2 round trips to McCall from Johnson Creek for gas. That is 24 gallons at $5.59 that saved $134.00

Also the gas across the street from McCall has 91 ethanol free. It was $4.09 when I got there for Super Cub. It was $3.99 5 days later.

On the way over and back I stopped at my place in Madras. I put in 12 gallons of 91 EF mogas each way. 24 gallons at $4.00 VS $5.85. Saved $44.00

Another plus was I let 2 friends use gas to save them a trip to McCall so they could fly 1st then hit McCall and bring the bag back full.

My only bitch is 1 of the threaded couplers needs improvement. I MacGyver it =D> My schedule 40 valve is doing fine, go figure.

Re: Alaska Bushwheel gas "can"

I have two of the ABW bags and used them for the first time on our trip to Idaho. They tucked under the rear seat of the Pacer and stayed there all week, unless I put gas in them. I was short on time, so Wup sent me the valve they have. It was great, just put the bag on the wing, put the spout in the tank, open the valve and keep preflighting. A few minutes later, I climbed back up on the tire, emptied the last few drops that did not self drain and I was done. It is always comforting to me to have a few gallons around, so that if I end up light on fuel, which I try to be in the backcountry, I know that I just put 5 or 10 gallons in and will be able to make it where I need to go, even if the ceilings are low and I cannot go direct etc.

I need a little practice filling them, as it was easy to accidentally squeeze them while filling and slosh fuel out. Not sure if the bags will "break in", but that may help.

You might want to edit your original post, I heard there are people in the FAA who lurk and listen in on many of the internet forums. Perhaps you actually want to walk everyday for "general health reasons" instead of the one you mentioned. As Tom Wolfe said in the book "The Right Stuff", there are only two possible outcomes from a visit to a flight surgeon's office. Either you can be no worse off than when you walked in, or you can be worse off than when you walked in. I should be walking everyday for similar general health reasons as well.

You have all seen those blue 7 gal. Aqua Tainer water jugs sold in the camping stores or Walmart. They have the design features to make a good gas can. Shut off spout and air vent and hold 7 gallons. I bought two to try out.

Re: Alaska Bushwheel gas "can"

I drive a little Toyota Yaris, the things that look like a jellybean, and today I came back from town with all kinds of crap in addition to the ABW gas bag filled with plane mo-gas. I really like the way it pretty much stays where you put it, unlike the top heavy slick plastic cans. It fills as quick and easy as any can, and with just light torque on the cap NO smell whatsoever much less any seeping. My point is, to justify getting one for the airplane, don't forget it is a real handy all around fuel container, it'd be great lashed down on a 4-wheeler rack for instance. I had a Harley rider eyeballing it the last time I filled it......

Re: Alaska Bushwheel gas "can"

Here is my adaptation of a valve for those ABW gas bags. It is a work in progress. Trying to figure out how to get a 90 degree elbow in there that will always be pointed in the right direction. The three threads on the main connection usually means I have to try three time before I get it right.

Re: Alaska Bushwheel gas "can"

I'm on a cross country float flying trip and so farm I can report that the nine dollar cheaper than dirt Swiss water bags are friggin awesome fuel bags. Transported five full ones in a rental car today, easy to handle, not a drop spilled. Also easy to fuel the plane with.
