I dont see many Scouts around, and the price of a new one is like a used Super Cub and cheaper than a Cub Crafters.
Why are they not so popular?

I don't know why we don't see more Scouts around. Without having flown one, I think they are a great airplane. I have been through the factory several times and had the chance to look at many Scouts up close. I feel the quality of workmanship on these airplanes is excellent. They are really beautiful machines. When flown competently, they are great performers.

The factory is only an hour from me. You should buy one and I'll fly it down to Costa Rica for you.

Could it be it doesnt look as cool as a Husky,Piper cub or carbon cub?

Scouts are awesome. I've flown three different ones and all were very impressive. Vg's make them even better. Kinda like a big rans:). Way roomy if you're on the big side too.

The first time I flew a tail dragger was Don Emslies Scout. It's the older Bellanca version and has the o-360 but I believe he has a borer prop or something fix pitched. I loved it. (Sunk the hook even deeper) If my budget were a little higher, a scout would be high on the list. I like the idea that performance is "close" to a Supercub on T/O and Landing, but cruise is a good bit faster. I think John Graham has 4 or 5000 hrs on his. He knows them well.

We have 2 new Scouts at KSAC. One is on amphibs up at Lake Tahoe in summer and 35" ABW's in the winter with TrickAir Alpine 3500 wheel skis ( snow permitting). The Scout meets or exceeds our local operating parameters and mission needs.

Facts:
Scout will Cruise at 120kts, holds 72 gallons fuel, instant trim, efficient heater, door, extended baggage. Belly pod from Airglass is forthcoming. Recommend you fly a supercub, Husky and Scout under your mission profile. Than pull the trigger.

Performance:
Land like a Supercub. Note- Takeoff distance is 25% greater than a cub. However, you have long legs and you will be done paying the lunch bill before all the Supercubs show up for lunch!

Conclusion:
Buy two Scouts instead of a husky so you can lend one to your buddy that just bought a rolex, leather jacket and polarized aviators for his glass panel Husky costing over $330K. (He won't fly it in under off airport environments anyway.)

I love flying Champions and think there's more value in them per dollar than the other leading certified tandems. But American Champion just hasn't done a good job of defining itself within a small market against some competitors that have built themselves much stronger brands.

Scouts are pretty good value for money, especially when compared to new Husky prices!








And when tricked out right, even a Citabria makes a nice, comfortable, capable backcountry airplane.

Apart from VGs are there many STCs for Scouts, STOL kits leading edge, aileron gap seals etc?

I like them. In order, I have owned a '55 C-180, '74 Scout, '53 160hp L21 Supercub, '74 Scout, then I ordered a new Scout in late 2004. I have 5500 hrs on the '04 and I still love it.

The Super Cub with me flying would land and take off 150 ft shorter then the Scouts. I'm 6'5" and the Scout has way more room, goes 20 mph faster, holds 72 gallons of gas,and carries a lot more (because of the extra room).

When I bought the new Scout I looked hard at the Husky. Same power and prop. The Husky with the same equipment, was $50,000 more, held 20 gallons less gas. It was a no brainer for me. I would buy another Scout, unless I would buy a Rans S7s??

PS: I have a Sorenson belly aux gas tank (FS) for the Scout that holds 90 more gallons. I was going to use it on one of my old Scouts before I got the new one. That tank on a new Scout, one would have 160 gallons, or 16 hours non-stop at 120 mph.

ACA GCBC series are awesome, I looked seriously at them a few years ago before the family crackdown on tandem seating. I've flown Patrol Guy's plane and it was a great machine.

People will argue that the Scout is no match for a Super Cub in slow flight, and that's probably true, but they do many other things way better than a Cub-- things that may matter more to you than extreme short field performance.

- Speed
- Heater
- Room for big guys
- Forward hinging door for easy entry
- Big seats for big butts
- Lots of fuel

That said, I most often fly a Cub and I'm not complaining.

I cant speak for a scout, but have a citabria 7GCBC, and I love it great plane, just need something with more room.

Bought in 2009 and feel extremely lucky. I do not hit my head on the roof when sitting up straight like brand X.

8GCBC was designed for big boys from day one. You do not have to F with it to get it right.

I've seen a trio of guys in Idaho that can get Scouts in and out of spots that most Cub guys would never consider. They are a very capable backcountry plane when set up right, and with the right pilot.
