Austin Fly-in

The MOA's along 50 have corridors forVFR traffic between 2,000 and like 8000 agl. It's a pretty easy route once you study the chart and figure out the airspace as it's not as bad as it first appears.

Re: Austin Fly-in

Current chart is in the plane, but the chart is a tad confusing as to the boundaries of restricted areas 4810, 4804 A ,4816 S and 4812. Thanks, just wanted to confirm I was interpreting it correctly having spent a ton of time at sand mt n never seeing a plane. Well none that the pilot was paying the fuel bill anyway :-)

If you have access to computer, VFR map or Skyvector may show what you need. But either, way I think you'll find the way across easy enough.

Austin Fly-in

Or.... To make it really simple. Just make a slight end run and go along the southern edge of all the R stuff.

North of Yerington, over Shurz and the Rawhide Mine, north of Gabbs and then a straight shot to Smith Creek Dry Lake and before you know it you'll have Austin International filling the windshield.

Re: Austin Fly-in

Plan B may be better as its easier to judge 500ft agl (flying through the moa) than it is 2000 agl (bottom of the 50 corridor). Good plan, thanks

Re: Austin Fly-in

You can call Fallon Desert on 126.2 and get flight following from trainee controllers. About half the time you can get cleared direct to Austin through all Restricted areas. Otherwise they will tell you to use the VFR corridor. That corridor starts at Sand Mountain, on Highway 50 on the West side of 4816 and ya just follow highway 50 about 1/2 mile North of highway 50 at about 7,500' until you clear the Restricted Areas. You don't have to be on frequency to do that, but it doesn't hurt. After clearing the restricted areas, I just ask for frequency change and head direct to Austin. The MOAs are just advisory, just keep an eye out. No communication is mandatory, or monitor 126.2 if ya want... The restricted Areas are manditory tho. Avoid or get clearance through them.

Thanks Pops. I consider myself fairly chart savvy, but I've looked at this one several times and not been able to figure it out. I was actually going to find a local at HSF or Austin and have them walk me through it.

Any alcohol free gas in the area? I'm happy to taxi right up to the pump. ;)

Re: Austin Fly-in

I've been looking at this route as well. My direct path takes me pretty much right over the HSF lakebed and right through 4810 and 12. Looks like if I skirt South a tad I can avoid them all together.

Haha I think we should have a reverse air race too, but the slowest airplane wins.

Austin Fly-in

Just a heads up. There are two fire TFRs in place right now west of Austin. By Smith Creek and Middlegate. The route south of all the R airspace still works with just a slight bend further south between Gabbs and Smith Creek.
