Re: Austin Fly-in

We have 3 Single Engine Air Tankers operating out of Austin right now, but they are reasonably sure they will be gone by Wed, Thurs at the latest... Looks like just one TFR now, an the smoke is lookin better...

Re: Austin Fly-in

Unfortunately, I can't make it (although I'd consider sacrificing a limb to be there). Nevertheless, having some SEATS there would only make it that much more cool!

Re: Austin Fly-in

Pops if you see this can you post a PIREP for those coming in from the West. I am planning on using Yerington as a waypoint and going South of the TFR and restricted areas unless that's the way the smoke is blowing.

Re: Austin Fly-in

Well, thunderstorms and ATC conspired against me to get home last night. 3.5 hour ground hold in Florida! I'm now on a flight home...not sure how the rest of the day will pan out. How's the smoke that direction?

Visibility is about 5-miles in smoke at 6:30am in Elko. There is blue sky visible in patches above. The conditions here have improved most days later in the day. Yesterday we were at about 10 to 12-miles visibility in the afternoon.

About the same yesterday, all day. Reno got a little better in the afternoon. The smoke tops are not very high.
Check the other California DOT cams through the day. There are several smoke generators in N California and the western Nevada valleys are downwind at this time.

I'm trying to balance my weekend since I'm getting a later start than I wanted. How many nights are everyone staying? Is the main night Friday night? Then the Saturday flying?

Of all the Austin fly ins I've been to. Both nights were great. Usually a small BBQ Friday night and anything left gets BBQed Saturday night. Temps are nice and cool at night too. And why wouldn't anybody want to hang out with the Dory's and other great pilots for a couple nights anyway? :)

Re: Austin Fly-in

We are on fire watch at home right now with the most recent flare-up (an hour ago) only 8 miles away. Guess I am going to have to pass on this one. S68 is dicey anyway. IFR vis conditions part of most days and since we do not have an instrument approach it is effectively closed part of the day.

Oops, you owe some AF boys a beer. Minden is hosting the Thunderbirds, not the Blues!

5am and headed to the airport, then Austin. Looks to be clear in Elko this morning, at least as far as I can tell since it's still dark out. :D

Re: Austin Fly-in

1 mile, or less viz here. The wind shifted overnight, and now for the first time the smoke smell is really strong. I think this smoke is from the N Idaho fires, at least that's what my windsock indicates.

Well crap! I think we are out. Had a bunch of none airplane issues this morning and we are still an hour minimum before being airborne. Have fun and fly safe. See you at HSF!
